How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the exact dose, usually 0.1–2 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per minute as an infusion.

Method

The medicine is given as an injection or a continuous infusion directly into a vein. It will always be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital setting.

  • Muscle stiffness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood pressure
  • Slow heart rate
  • Shallow breathing
  • Itching
  • Shivering after surgery
  • High blood pressure after surgery
  • Cough
  • Temporary stop in breathing (apnea)
RARE
  • Constipation
  • Pain after surgery
  • Lack of oxygen (respiratory insufficiency)
  • Drowsiness (during recovery from surgery)
  • Severe allergic reaction (can include shock and heart problems)
  • Very slow heartbeat followed by a heart block

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to remifentanil or similar pain medicines (opioids).
  • This medicine should not be injected into your spinal canal.
  • Tell your doctor if you or a family member have a history of alcohol, prescription drug, or illicit drug abuse or addiction.
  • Inform your doctor if you have had mood problems (depression, anxiety) or other mental health conditions.
  • Stopping this medicine suddenly, especially after long-term use, can cause withdrawal symptoms like fast heart rate, high blood pressure, and restlessness.
