How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your weight, age, health, and the procedure. For adults, typical infusion rates are 0.1–2 micrograms per kg per minute. For children (1-12 years), typical rates are 0.05–1.3 micrograms per kg per minute, and for elderly patients, the starting dose is usually lower.

Method

This medicine will be given to you by a doctor or nurse directly into a vein as an injection or a drip. You should never give it to yourself.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum dose based on your needs, as this medicine is given as an infusion during a procedure and not as a fixed daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Shallow breathing
  • Itching
  • Chills after surgery
  • High blood pressure after surgery
  • Cough
  • Breathing stops (apnea)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (including shock, circulation problems, and heart attack)
  • Very slow heart rate followed by heart block (electrical problem in the heart)
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Heart rhythm problems (like irregular heartbeat)
  • Constipation
  • Pain after surgery
  • Lack of oxygen in the body (hypoxia)
  • Drowsiness (feeling sleepy) during recovery after the procedure
  • The medicine may become less effective over time (tolerance)
  • Withdrawal symptoms (can include fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, restlessness, feeling sick, vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, chills, shaking, and sweating)
  • Irregular heartbeat

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to remifentanil, any other ingredient in this medicine, or other opioid medicines like fentanyl.
  • This medicine must not be injected into your spinal canal.
  • This medicine must not be used as the only medicine to start anesthesia.
  • Tell your doctor if you have lung or liver problems, as you might have more breathing difficulties.
  • Tell your doctor if you or a family member have a history of alcohol, prescription medicine, or illegal drug abuse, as this medicine can cause addiction.

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. This medicine is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding (stop for 24 hours after use).
  • After receiving this medicine, do not drive, use machines, or work in dangerous conditions until you have fully recovered. You should not go home alone.
  • If you stop this medicine suddenly after using it for more than three days, you might have withdrawal symptoms like fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, and restlessness. Your doctor will help you stop the medicine safely.
