How to Use

Dosage

About 375 mg of ointment (which contains about 1.5 mg of glyceryl trinitrate).

Method

Apply gently with a finger into the anal canal, about 1 cm deep, every 12 hours. Use a finger cot or wrap.

Important

Do not use more than the dose your doctor prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headaches, which can be severe.
  • Feeling dizzy.
  • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea).
RARE
  • Loose stools (diarrhea).
  • Throwing up (vomiting).
  • Bleeding from the rectum or discomfort in the rectum.
  • Discomfort, itching, or burning in the anal canal.
  • Fast heartbeat or feeling your heart pound.
  • Feeling weak when you stand up.
  • Fainting or feeling like you might faint.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Irritation, rash, or pain where the ointment is applied.
  • Hot flashes (feeling sudden warmth).
  • Chest pain that comes and goes (unstable angina).
  • High blood pressure after stopping treatment.
  • Methemoglobinemia (skin turning blue/purple, trouble breathing).

Important Warnings

  • Stop using the ointment and get medical help right away if you have a serious allergic reaction, which can cause swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, or collapse.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to glyceryl trinitrate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have very low blood pressure, certain heart or blood vessel diseases, narrow-angle glaucoma (a specific eye condition), migraines, frequent headaches, high pressure inside your head (e.g., from head injury or brain bleed), or anemia (low iron in your blood).
  • Do not use if you are taking certain medicines for erectile dysfunction (like sildenafil), chest pain, high blood pressure, depression, or medicines such as acetylcysteine or alteplase.
  • Tell your doctor if you get severe headaches while using Rectogesic. They may need to adjust your dose or stop the treatment.

  • Be careful with alcohol, as it can make the ointment's effect stronger and increase dizziness or fainting.
  • Do not use Rectogesic if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Ask your doctor for advice.
  • Rectogesic is not for children or adolescents under 18 years old.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy, tired, or have blurred vision after starting to use the ointment.
  • This medicine contains lanolin and propylene glycol, which can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions (like a rash).
