How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual daily dose is 0.5-2.5 mg of lorazepam, taken in 2-3 doses or once in the evening.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole or halved with liquid, such as half a glass of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose for anxiety treatment is 7.5 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness, tiredness, feeling sleepy.
  • Unsteady movements and walking (ataxia).
  • Confusion, depression, or worsening depression.
  • Dizziness.
  • Muscle weakness, fatigue.
RARE
  • Changes in sex drive, impotence, decreased orgasm.
  • Nausea.
  • Rash.
  • Decreased alertness.
  • Changes in saliva production.
  • Decrease in white blood cells (leukopenia).
  • Changes in blood counts (e.g., decrease in platelets).
  • Prolonged reaction time.
  • Impaired coordination (movement disorders).
  • Tremor.
  • Vision problems (double vision, blurred vision).
  • Slurred speech.
  • Headache.
  • Seizures/epileptic fits.
  • Memory loss.
  • Loss of inhibitions, euphoria (strong feeling of well-being).
  • Coma.
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts.
  • Impaired concentration.
  • Balance problems.
  • Vertigo.
  • Unexpected reactions like anxiety, agitation, delusions, irritability, aggressive behavior, sleep problems, sexual arousal, hallucinations, psychosis.
  • Dependence (physical and psychological).
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Severe breathing difficulty (dose-dependent), shortness of breath, worsening sleep apnea.
  • Worsening of COPD (narrowing of airways).
  • Constipation.
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), elevated liver enzymes.
  • Allergic skin reactions, hair loss, hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Disorder of excessive antidiuretic hormone secretion.
  • Low sodium levels in blood.
  • Lowered body temperature.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to lorazepam, other similar medicines (benzodiazepines), or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe breathing problems, like serious asthma or COPD.
  • Do not take if you have a muscle weakness condition called myasthenia gravis.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take if you have sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep).

  • Talk to your doctor if you have a history of drug, substance, or alcohol abuse, as the risk of dependence is higher.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a personality disorder, as the risk of dependence is higher.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are elderly, as there might be an increased risk of falls.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had depression or if you have suicidal thoughts, as this medicine might make them worse.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without your doctor's advice to avoid withdrawal symptoms. The dose must be gradually reduced.
  • This medicine can affect your ability to drive or operate machinery, especially at the start of treatment. Do not drive or use machines until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor considers it absolutely necessary.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase the effects of the medicine and cause unexpected reactions.
