How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you exactly how much to take. It often starts with 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg once a day, but this can change based on your health needs.

Method

Take the tablets whole with some liquid at the same time each day. You can take them with or without food. Do not crush or chew them, but they can be divided if needed.

Important

The highest dose you should take in a day is usually 10 mg, but your doctor will set the right amount for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache or feeling tired.
  • Dizziness, especially when starting the medicine or increasing your dose.
  • Fainting or unusually low blood pressure, especially when standing up quickly.
  • Dry, irritating cough, sinus infection, bronchitis, or shortness of breath.
  • Stomach or gut pain, diarrhea, indigestion, feeling sick, or throwing up.
  • Skin rash with or without swelling.
  • Chest pain.
  • Muscle cramps or muscle pain.
  • Higher than normal potassium levels in the blood (shown in blood tests).
RARE
  • Balance problems (feeling like you're spinning).
  • Itching or unusual skin feelings like numbness, tingling, burning, or crawling.
  • Changed or lost sense of taste.
  • Sleep problems.
  • Feeling down, anxious, restless, or more nervous.
  • Stuffy nose, trouble breathing, or worsening of asthma.
  • Swelling in the gut (intestinal angioedema), which can cause stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Heartburn, constipation, or dry mouth.
  • Urinating more than usual.
  • Reduced kidney function or sudden kidney failure.
  • More sweating than usual.
  • Loss or decrease of appetite.
  • Increased or irregular heartbeats, swollen arms and legs (may be a sign of fluid buildup in your body).
  • Flushing (redness of the face).
  • Blurred vision.
  • Fever.
  • Inability to have sex (men), reduced sex drive (men and women).
  • Increased number of certain white blood cells (eosinophilia) seen in blood tests, or other changes in liver, pancreas, or kidney function shown in blood tests.
  • Feeling shaky or confused.
  • Red and swollen tongue.
  • Severe skin peeling or flaking, itchy lumpy rash.
  • Nail problems (e.g., loose or falling nails).
  • Skin rash or bruises, spots on skin and cold limbs.
  • Red, itchy, swollen, or watery eyes.
  • Hearing problems or ringing in the ears.
  • Feeling weak.
  • Blood tests showing lower red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, or hemoglobin levels.
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Dark, concentrated urine, feeling sick, muscle cramps, confusion, and seizures, possibly due to a hormone problem (ADH). Contact your doctor right away if you have these.
  • Difficulty concentrating.
  • Mouth sores.
  • Blood tests showing increased antibody levels.
  • Blood tests showing too few blood cells or lower than normal sodium levels.
  • Fingers and toes changing color when cold, then tingling and pain when warming up (Raynaud's phenomenon).
  • Breast enlargement in men.
  • Unusually slow or impaired reactions.
  • Burning sensation.
  • Altered sense of smell.
  • Hair loss.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to ramipril, other similar medicines (ACE inhibitors), or any of its ingredients. Signs of a serious allergic reaction include swelling of the face, lips, or throat, which can make it hard to swallow or breathe.
  • Stop taking and get urgent medical help if you get severe skin problems like rashes, mouth sores, or peeling skin (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • Do not take this medicine if you are more than 3 months pregnant, if you are on dialysis, have severe kidney problems, or have very low or unstable blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines for heart failure (like sacubitril/valsartan) or medicines that contain aliskiren for high blood pressure, especially if you have diabetes or kidney problems.
  • Always tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine before any surgery or dental work that requires anesthesia.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
