How to Use

Dosage

The recommended dose is 1200 mg, taken as two 600 mg tablets once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew, crush, or split them. You can take this medicine with or without food.

Important

Do not take more tablets than your doctor recommends.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced appetite
  • Trouble sleeping, unusual dreams, nightmares, abnormal behavior, feeling deeply sad or worthless
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Feeling faint
  • Bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea, increased gas in the stomach or intestines, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, burping
  • Certain types of rash (more common when used with darunavir)
  • Fatigue, unusual tiredness or weakness, fever
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood, abnormal white blood cells, increased blood fat levels, increased salivary gland or pancreas enzyme levels
RARE
  • Herpes infections, including shingles
  • Anemia, including anemia caused by iron deficiency
  • Signs and symptoms of infection or inflammation
  • Mental disorder
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Gastritis (stomach inflammation)
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Liver failure
  • Allergic rash
  • Certain kidney problems
  • Taking a larger dose of medicine than recommended
  • Folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles)
  • Influenza (flu)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to raltegravir or any of its other ingredients.
  • This medicine does not cure HIV infection; you can still get other infections and pass HIV to others, so regular doctor visits are important.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of depression or mental illness, especially if you have thoughts of harming yourself.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience joint stiffness, pain (especially in your hips, knees, or shoulders), or have trouble moving.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of liver problems, including hepatitis B or C.

  • Immediately tell your doctor if you notice any new signs of infection (like fever) or inflammation, including muscle weakness, weakness starting in hands/feet, heart palpitations, trembling, or hyperactivity.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness while taking this medicine.
  • See your doctor immediately if you develop a rash, as severe and life-threatening skin reactions have been reported with this medicine.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy after taking this medicine.
  • If you are HIV-positive, it is not recommended to breastfeed, as the HIV infection can be passed to your baby through breast milk.
