How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your starting dose. The usual daily dose is between 150 mg and 800 mg.

Method

Take your tablets once a day. Swallow them whole with water. Do not break, chew, or crush them. Take them without food, at least one hour before a meal or at bedtime, as your doctor advises. Do not drink grapefruit juice.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually up to 800 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness (can lead to falls)
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling sleepy (this may lessen with continued use, can lead to falls)
  • Withdrawal symptoms if you stop suddenly, such as trouble sleeping, feeling sick, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, and irritability. It's best to stop slowly over 1-2 weeks.
  • Weight gain
  • Abnormal muscle movements, such as trouble starting movements, shaking, feeling restless, or stiff muscles without pain
  • Changes in certain fat levels in your blood (triglycerides and total cholesterol)
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Feeling like your heart is pounding or skipping beats
  • Constipation, upset stomach
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in arms or legs
  • Low blood pressure when standing up, which can make you feel dizzy or faint (can lead to falls)
  • High blood sugar
  • Blurred vision
  • Abnormal dreams and nightmares
  • Increased hunger
  • Irritability
  • Speech and language problems
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or worsening depression
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomiting (mainly in older people)
  • Fever
  • Changes in thyroid hormone levels in the blood
  • Decrease in certain types of white blood cells
  • Increase in liver enzymes in blood tests
  • Increased prolactin hormone in the blood (can rarely cause breast swelling in men and women, unexpected milk production, or missed/irregular periods in women)
RARE
  • Seizures
  • Allergic reactions, such as hives or swelling around the skin and mouth
  • Unpleasant sensation in the legs (restless legs syndrome)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Involuntary movements, especially in the face or tongue
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity seen on an ECG (QT prolongation)
  • Diabetes
  • Slower than normal heart rate, which may occur at the start of treatment or with low blood pressure and fainting
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Fainting (can lead to falls)
  • Stuffy nose
  • Decrease in red blood cells
  • Decrease in sodium in the blood
  • Worsening of diabetes
  • Confusion
  • A serious condition with fever, sweating, stiff muscles, severe drowsiness, or weakness (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Long-lasting and painful erection (priapism)
  • Breast swelling and unexpected milk discharge (galactorrhea)
  • Menstrual problems
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in the legs (with symptoms like swelling, pain, and redness). These can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and breathing difficulties. Seek medical help immediately if you have these symptoms.
  • Walking, talking, or eating in your sleep
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Metabolic syndrome: a condition with at least three of these: increased belly fat, low 'good' cholesterol, high blood fats (triglycerides), high blood pressure, and high blood sugar
  • Agranulocytosis: a condition with fever, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, or another infection combined with a very low white blood cell count
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Increased levels of creatine phosphokinase in the blood (a substance from muscles)
  • Severe rash with blisters or red spots on the skin
  • Severe allergic reaction (anafylaktisk shock) that can cause breathing difficulties or shock
  • Sudden swelling of the skin, usually around the eyes, lips, or throat (angioedema)
  • Severe blistering on the skin, in the mouth, eyes, or genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Abnormal secretion of a hormone that controls urine volume
  • Muscle fiber breakdown and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Rash with irregular red patches (erythema multiforme)
  • Sudden red skin areas with small pus-filled blisters (acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis)
  • Severe, sudden allergic reaction with symptoms like fever, skin blisters, and peeling skin (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • DRESS (flu-like symptoms, rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and abnormal blood tests including high white blood cells and liver enzymes)
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborn babies if the mother used Quetiapine Accord during pregnancy
  • Stroke
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy)
  • Heart muscle inflammation (myocarditis)
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), often with a red or purple spotted rash

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to quetiapine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take with certain HIV medicines, antifungal medicines, some antibiotics (erythromycin or clarithromycin), or the antidepressant nefazodone.
  • Seek urgent medical help if you have a high fever, very stiff muscles, sweating, or feel less aware (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome).
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have uncontrolled movements, especially in your face or tongue.
  • Report dizziness or severe drowsiness, as this can increase the risk of falls, especially in older people.

  • Tell your doctor if you experience seizures.
  • Seek medical help if you have a long-lasting and painful erection.
  • Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you have a fever, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, or other infection, as this could mean a very low white blood cell count.
  • Inform your doctor about severe constipation and stomach pain that doesn't get better, as it could lead to a serious bowel blockage.
  • If you feel depressed, thoughts of harming yourself or suicide may increase, especially at the start of treatment or if you stop suddenly. Seek immediate medical or hospital help if you have such thoughts.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you get severe skin reactions like widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, DRESS, AGEP, Erythema multiforme).
  • Weight gain has been observed; you and your doctor should check your weight regularly.
  • Quetiapine Accord should not be used in children or adolescents under 18 years of age.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
