How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you your dose; it's usually between 150 mg and 800 mg daily, tailored to your condition and needs.

Method

Take tablets whole with water, once daily at bedtime or twice daily, with or without food.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose is 800 mg, but always follow your doctor's specific instructions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness (can lead to falls)
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Sleepiness (may lessen with continued use)
  • Withdrawal symptoms if stopping suddenly, like trouble sleeping, nausea, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, and irritability.
  • Weight gain
  • Abnormal muscle movements (difficulty starting movements, shaking, restlessness, muscle stiffness without pain).
  • Changes in blood fat levels (triglycerides and total cholesterol).
  • Fast heart rate
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • Constipation
  • Upset stomach (digestion problems)
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in arms or legs
  • Low blood pressure, especially when standing up (can cause dizziness or fainting).
  • High blood sugar
  • Blurred vision
  • Abnormal dreams or nightmares
  • Increased appetite
  • Irritability
  • Speech or language problems
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or worsening depression
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomiting (mainly in elderly)
  • Fever
  • Changes in thyroid hormone levels in blood
  • Decrease in certain white blood cell types
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood
  • Increased prolactin hormone in blood (can cause breast swelling, unexpected breast milk production, or irregular periods).
RARE
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Allergic reactions like hives, or swelling around the face and mouth.
  • Fainting
  • Unpleasant feeling in legs (restless legs syndrome)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Uncontrolled movements, especially of the face or tongue.
  • Sexual problems
  • Stuffy nose
  • Diabetes or worsening of existing diabetes.
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity (seen on an ECG).
  • Abnormally slow heartbeat (can cause low blood pressure and fainting).
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Low red blood cell count
  • Low sodium in blood
  • Confusion
  • A serious syndrome with high fever, sweating, stiff muscles, and confusion (neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Long-lasting and painful erection (priapism).
  • Menstrual irregularities.
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in the legs, which can cause swelling, pain, redness, and potentially travel to the lungs causing chest pain and breathing difficulties.
  • Sleepwalking, talking, or eating in your sleep.
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia).
  • Breast swelling or unexpected milk production.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Metabolic syndrome (a combination of health issues including increased belly fat, low 'good' cholesterol, high blood fats, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar).
  • Very low white blood cell count (agranulocytosis), with symptoms like fever, flu-like illness, sore throat, or other infection.
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Increased levels of creatine phosphokinase (an enzyme from muscles) in the blood.
  • Severe skin reactions such as widespread rash with blisters, peeling skin, or small pus-filled blisters, often with fever and flu-like symptoms.
  • Stroke
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy) or inflammation (myocarditis).
  • Blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis), often with small red or purple skin spots.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to quetiapine or any other ingredients listed in section 6 of the leaflet.
  • Do not take with certain medicines for HIV, fungal infections (azoles), bacterial infections (erythromycin, clarithromycin), or depression (nefazodone).
  • Tell your doctor if you take antidepressants, as combining them with Quetiapine Accord can cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, low blood pressure, or take medicines that affect your heartbeat or electrolyte balance.
  • If you are elderly and have dementia, this medicine may increase the risk of stroke or death.

  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots, as this medicine can increase the risk.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience fever, severe muscle stiffness, sweating, confusion (neuroleptic malignant syndrome); uncontrolled movements; severe dizziness or sleepiness (fall risk for elderly); seizures; long-lasting, painful erection; fast or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest pain, or extreme tiredness.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you get severe skin reactions like widespread rash with blisters, peeling skin, flu-like symptoms, fever, swollen lymph nodes, or small pus-filled blisters.
  • Do not drink grapefruit juice and be careful with alcohol, as they can affect how the medicine works or make you sleepy.
  • Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding without discussing with your doctor first.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy. Do not drive or operate machines until you know how it affects you.
  • This medicine is not for children or adolescents under 18 years old.
