How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your starting dose and the daily maintenance dose, which is usually between 150 mg and 800 mg, depending on your condition and needs.

Method

Take the tablets whole with water once or twice a day, with or without food. Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

Important

The maximum daily dose is typically 800 mg, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness (which can lead to falls), headache, dry mouth.
  • Feeling sleepy (this may lessen with continued use).
  • Withdrawal symptoms if you stop the medicine suddenly, such as trouble sleeping, nausea, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, and irritability.
  • Weight gain.
  • Abnormal muscle movements, like difficulty starting movements, shaking, restlessness, or stiffness without pain.
  • Changes in certain blood fat levels (triglycerides and total cholesterol).
  • Fast heartbeat or irregular heart rhythm.
  • Constipation, upset stomach (digestive problems).
  • Weakness, swelling in arms or legs.
  • Low blood pressure when standing up, which can make you dizzy or faint (can lead to falls).
  • High blood sugar levels.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Abnormal dreams and nightmares.
  • Increased hunger.
  • Irritability.
  • Speech and language difficulties.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Vomiting (mainly in elderly patients).
  • Fever.
  • Changes in blood thyroid hormone levels.
  • Decrease in certain types of white blood cells.
  • Increase in liver enzymes measured in blood.
  • Increase in prolactin hormone levels in the blood. In rare cases, this can lead to breast swelling and unexpected milk production in men and women, and missed or irregular periods in women.
RARE
  • Seizures.
  • Allergic reactions, such as hives or swelling around the face and mouth.
  • Fainting (can lead to falls).
  • Unpleasant feeling in the legs (restless legs syndrome).
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Uncontrolled movements, especially of the face or tongue.
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Nasal congestion.
  • Diabetes.
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity (QT prolongation) or abnormally slow heart rate.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Decrease in red blood cell count.
  • Decrease in blood sodium levels.
  • Worsening of diabetes.
  • Confusion.
  • A serious reaction called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (high fever, sweating, stiff muscles, extreme drowsiness or weakness).
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Long-lasting and painful erection (priapism).
  • Menstrual problems.
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in the legs (with symptoms like swelling, pain, redness), which can travel to the lungs and cause chest pain and breathing difficulties.
  • Sleepwalking, sleep-talking, sleep-eating, or other activities during sleep.
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia).
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
  • Metabolic syndrome (a combination of increased belly fat, low 'good' cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar).
  • Severe decrease in white blood cells (agranulocytosis), often with fever, flu-like symptoms, and sore throat.
  • Bowel obstruction.
  • Increased levels of creatine phosphokinase (a substance from muscles) in the blood.
  • Severe allergic shock, which can cause breathing difficulties or collapse.
  • Rapid swelling of the skin, usually around the eyes, lips, or throat.
  • Muscle damage and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis).
  • Stroke.
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy).
  • Heart muscle inflammation (myocarditis).
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), often with small red or purple rashes on the skin.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to quetiapine or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take with certain HIV medicines, azole antifungal medicines, erythromycin or clarithromycin (antibiotics), or nefazodone (an antidepressant).
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
  • Be careful with alcohol and avoid grapefruit juice, as they can affect how the medicine works.

  • If you have depression and are taking antidepressants, talk to your doctor, as combining these medicines can cause a life-threatening serotonin syndrome.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if your mood worsens or you have suicidal thoughts, especially at the start of treatment or after a dose change.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you develop severe skin reactions like widespread rash, blisters, skin peeling, fever, or swelling.
  • Weight gain has been observed; your doctor should check your weight regularly.
  • Quetiapine should not be used in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
