How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, which is usually between 150 mg and 800 mg per day.

Method

Take the tablets once or twice a day. Swallow them whole with water, with or without food. Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 800 mg, but your doctor will specify your exact dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, which can make you fall.
  • Headache.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Feeling sleepy (this may lessen as you continue taking the medicine and can also lead to falls).
  • Withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking the medicine suddenly, such as trouble sleeping, feeling sick, headache, diarrhea, throwing up, dizziness, or feeling easily annoyed.
  • Weight gain.
  • Unusual muscle movements, such as difficulty starting movements, shaking, feeling restless, or stiff muscles without pain.
  • Changes in the levels of fats (triglycerides and cholesterol) in your blood.
  • Increased appetite.
  • Vomiting (more common in older people and children).
  • Higher levels of a hormone called prolactin in your blood. This can sometimes cause breast swelling or unexpected milk production in men and women, or missed or irregular periods in women.
  • Increased blood pressure.
RARE
  • Seizures or fits.
  • Allergic reactions, such as hives, swelling of the skin, or swelling around your mouth or face.
  • Unpleasant feeling in the legs (restless legs syndrome).
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Diabetes or worsening of existing diabetes.
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity seen on an ECG (QT prolongation).
  • Slower heartbeat than normal, especially when starting the medicine, which may come with low blood pressure and fainting.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Fainting, which can make you fall.
  • Stuffy nose.
  • Low level of red blood cells.
  • Low sodium level in the blood.
  • Confusion.
  • A serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, with symptoms like high fever, sweating, very stiff muscles, and feeling very drowsy or weak.
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • A long-lasting and painful erection (priapism).
  • Breast swelling and unexpected milk production (galactorrhea).
  • Missed or irregular periods.
  • Blood clots in the veins, especially in the legs (with symptoms like swelling, pain, and redness), which can travel to the lungs causing chest pain and breathing difficulties.
  • Sleepwalking, sleeptalking, sleep eating, or other activities while asleep.
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia).
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
  • Metabolic syndrome, which means you have at least three of these: increased belly fat, low 'good' cholesterol, high fat levels in your blood, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar.
  • A condition called agranulocytosis (fever, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, or other infection with very low white blood cells).
  • Blocked bowel.
  • Increased levels of creatine phosphokinase (a substance from muscles) in your blood.
  • Severe skin reactions like rashes, blisters, or peeling skin (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS, AGEP, erythema multiforme).
  • Sudden swelling of the skin, usually around the eyes, lips, or throat (angioedema).
  • Muscle breakdown and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis).
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy).
  • Heart muscle inflammation (myocarditis).
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), often with small red or purple bumps on the skin.
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborn babies if the mother used Quetiapin Orion during pregnancy.
  • Stroke.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to quetiapine or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are also taking certain medicines for HIV, fungal infections (azoles), bacterial infections (erythromycin, clarithromycin), or depression (nefazodone).
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems (like irregular heartbeat), low blood pressure, or a history of stroke, especially if you are older.
  • Inform your doctor if you have diabetes or are at high risk of getting it, as your blood sugar levels may need to be checked.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems or have had seizures (epilepsy).

  • This medicine should not be given to children or teenagers under 18 years old.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you get a high fever, very stiff muscles, sweating, or feel confused or less aware.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you have movements you cannot control, especially in your face or tongue.
  • Be careful of dizziness or extreme sleepiness, which can increase the risk of falls, especially for older people.
  • Get medical help immediately if you experience a fast, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, or trouble breathing.
  • Report any signs of infection (fever, flu-like symptoms, sore throat) or severe constipation with stomach pain to your doctor as soon as possible.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital right away.
  • Stop taking this medicine and get immediate medical help if you develop a severe skin rash with blisters or peeling skin.
