How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe the right dose for you, usually between 150 and 800 mg per day.

Method

Take one tablet once daily, whole with water, at least one hour before a meal or at bedtime. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet. Avoid grapefruit juice.

Important

The maximum dose is usually 800 mg per day.

  • Changes in certain fat levels in the blood (triglycerides and total cholesterol)
  • Fast heartbeat or palpitations
  • Constipation or indigestion
  • Weakness or swelling in arms or legs
  • Low blood pressure when standing up (can make you dizzy or faint)
  • High blood sugar
  • Blurred vision
  • Increased appetite
  • Suicidal thoughts or worsening depression
  • Increased prolactin hormone levels (can lead to breast swelling, unexpected milk production, or irregular periods)
RARE
  • Seizures
  • Allergic reactions (like hives or swelling of the skin and around the mouth)
  • Restless legs syndrome (unpleasant feeling in the legs)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Sexual problems
  • Diabetes
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity seen on an ECG (QT prolongation)
  • Slower than normal heart rate (can lead to low blood pressure and fainting)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Low red blood cells or low sodium in blood
  • Worsening diabetes or confusion
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (fever, very stiff muscles, sweating, feeling very sleepy or weak)
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice) or liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Long-lasting and painful erection (priapism)
  • Blood clots (especially in the legs, with swelling, pain, redness, or if they travel to the lungs causing chest pain and breathing problems)
  • Sleepwalking, sleep-talking, sleep-eating or other activities while asleep
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Severe skin reactions (like widespread blisters, peeling skin, rash with fever and swollen glands, or small pus-filled spots)
  • Rapid swelling of the skin, usually around the eyes, lips, or throat (angioedema)
  • Muscle breakdown and pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Stroke
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy) or inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to quetiapine or if you are taking certain medicines for HIV, fungal infections (like erythromycin or clarithromycin), or the antidepressant called nefazodone.
  • Get help from a doctor right away if you have a fever, very stiff muscles, sweating, and feel confused or very sleepy (this is a rare but serious condition). Also get help if you have movements you can't control (especially in your face or tongue), feel very dizzy or drowsy (which can make you fall, especially if you are older), have seizures, a long and painful erection, or a fast or uneven heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get a fever, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, or other infections, or if you have bad constipation or stomach pain that doesn't get better.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or if your depression gets worse, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Stop taking the medicine and see a doctor right away if you get serious skin rashes, like widespread blisters or peeling skin, a rash with fever and swollen glands, or small pus-filled spots on your skin.

  • You and your doctor should check your weight regularly, as this medicine can cause weight gain.
  • This medicine is not for children or teenagers under 18 years old.
  • Do not drink alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as they can affect how it works and make you more sleepy.
  • Talk to your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • Do not drive or use machines until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can make you feel sleepy.
