How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your starting dose. The usual daily dose ranges from 150 mg to 800 mg, depending on your condition.

Method

Take the tablets once a day, whole with water. Do not break, chew, or crush them. Take them without food, at least one hour before a meal or at bedtime, as directed by your doctor. Avoid grapefruit juice.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness (may lead to falls)
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness (may lessen with continued use of tablets)
  • Withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking the medicine suddenly (like trouble sleeping, feeling sick, headache, diarrhea, throwing up, dizziness, or feeling irritable)
  • Weight gain
  • Abnormal muscle movements (like trouble starting movements, shaking, restlessness, or stiff muscles without pain)
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Constipation
  • Upset stomach
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Swelling in arms or legs
  • Low blood pressure (can make you dizzy or faint, especially when standing up)
  • High blood sugar
  • Blurred vision
  • Bad dreams or nightmares
  • Increased appetite
  • Feeling irritable
  • Problems with speaking or speech
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or worsening depression
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomiting (mainly in older people)
  • Fever
  • Changes in thyroid hormone levels in blood tests
  • Decrease in certain types of white blood cells
  • Increase in liver enzymes in blood tests
  • Increase in prolactin hormone in the blood (can cause breast swelling, unexpected milk production, or missed/irregular periods in women)
RARE
  • Seizures (epileptic fits)
  • Allergic reactions (like hives, swelling around the mouth or skin)
  • Restless legs syndrome (uncomfortable feeling in your legs)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Uncontrolled movements, especially of the face or tongue
  • Sexual problems
  • Diabetes
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity (seen on an ECG)
  • Slower heartbeat than normal at the start of treatment (can cause low blood pressure and fainting)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Stuffy nose
  • Decrease in red blood cells
  • Decrease in sodium in the blood
  • Worsening diabetes
  • Confusion
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (a serious condition with high fever, sweating, very stiff muscles, severe drowsiness, or fainting)
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Long-lasting, painful erection (priapism)
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in legs (swelling, pain, redness; can travel to lungs causing chest pain, breathing problems)
  • Sleepwalking, sleep-talking, eating or doing other activities while asleep
  • Lower body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Metabolic syndrome (a combination of increased belly fat, low 'good' cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar)
  • Severe skin reactions (rashes, blisters, red patches, peeling skin)
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock, breathing difficulties, shock)
  • Rapid swelling of the skin, usually around the eyes, lips, or throat (angioedema)
  • Stroke
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy)
  • Heart muscle inflammation (myocarditis)
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis) often with small red or purple spots on the skin.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to quetiapine or other ingredients, or if you are taking certain medicines for HIV, fungal infections, or depression (e.g., nefazodone), or antibiotics like erythromycin or clarithromycin.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience fever, severe muscle stiffness, sweating, confusion, uncontrolled movements (especially face/tongue), seizures, long-lasting painful erection, or a fast, irregular heartbeat with chest pain or trouble breathing.
  • Tell your doctor if you get a fever, flu-like symptoms, or a sore throat, as this could mean you have very few white blood cells, which needs immediate treatment.
  • If you are depressed and have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor or nearest hospital right away.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe skin reactions like rashes, blisters, or peeling skin.

  • Do not stop taking your tablets suddenly, even if you feel better, without first talking to your doctor, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms.
