Psylipax

Psylipax contains paliperidone and is used to treat long-term symptoms of schizophrenia in adults who have already started treatment with paliperidone or risperidone.

How to Use

Dosage

The first shot is 150 mg, and the second shot (one week later) is 100 mg, both given in your upper arm. After that, you will get a shot of 25-150 mg in your upper arm or buttock once a month. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on your symptoms.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a shot deep into a muscle in your upper arm or buttock. It must not be given into a vein or under the skin.

Important

This medicine is given as a monthly injection, so there is no daily maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Trouble falling asleep or restless sleep.
  • Flu-like symptoms, urinary tract infections.
  • Increased prolactin hormone (can cause breast swelling, problems with erections, milk discharge, or missed periods).
  • High blood sugar, weight gain or loss, decreased appetite.
  • Irritability, depression, anxiety.
  • Parkinson-like symptoms (slow or stiff movements, tremors, mask-like face), restlessness, drowsiness, involuntary muscle contractions (dystonia), involuntary jerking movements (dyskinesia).
  • Dizziness, headache.
  • Fast heart rate, high blood pressure.
  • Cough, stuffy nose.
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, toothache.
  • Muscle or bone pain, back pain, joint pain.
  • Fever, weakness, tiredness.
  • Itching, pain, or swelling at the injection site.
RARE
  • Pneumonia, bronchitis, various infections (sinus, bladder, ear, skin, fungal), low white blood cell counts, anemia, decrease in platelets.
  • Severe allergic reaction with fever, swelling of mouth/face/tongue, breathing difficulties, rash, itching, and sometimes low blood pressure.
  • New or worse diabetes, very high levels of insulin in blood, increased or decreased appetite, high fat/cholesterol levels, dangerous complications from uncontrolled diabetes, very low blood sugar, drinking too much water.
  • Sleep disorders, high mood (mania), low sex drive, nervousness, nightmares, severe uncontrolled movements of face/tongue (tardive dyskinesia), fainting, restless legs, balance issues, speech problems, loss or change of taste, reduced sensation in skin, tingling/numbness, blurred vision, eye inflammation, dry eyes, spinning sensation (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain, abnormal coordination, confusion, sleepwalking, lack of emotions, inability to orgasm, catatonia (immobility and unresponsiveness).
  • Abnormal heart rhythms or conduction, long QT interval on EKG, fast heart rate when standing, slow heart rate, abnormal EKG, pounding heart, low blood pressure (especially when standing, causing weakness/dizziness/fainting), blood clots in lungs (chest pain, breathing issues), blood clots in veins (swelling/pain/redness in legs), flushing, atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), lack of oxygen to body parts due to poor blood flow.
  • Shortness of breath, sore throat, nosebleed, breathing difficulties during sleep (sleep apnea), lung congestion, airway congestion, crackling breath, wheezing, fast shallow breathing, pneumonia from inhaling food, voice problems.
  • Abdominal discomfort, stomach/intestinal inflammation, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, excessive gas, pancreatitis, swollen tongue, inability to control bowel movements, very hard stool, bowel obstruction, chapped lips, stopped bowel movements leading to blockage.
  • Hives, itching, rash, hair loss, eczema, dry skin, skin redness, acne, pus collection under skin, thickened skin, dandruff, drug rash, skin discoloration, serious or life-threatening rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), injection site abscess/deep skin infection/cyst/bruise/wound.
  • Muscle cramps, stiff joints, muscle weakness, breakdown of muscle fibers and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis), joint swelling.
  • Urinary incontinence, frequent urination, painful urination, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems, missed/irregular periods (women), breast development in men, sexual problems, breast pain, milk discharge from breasts, vaginal discharge, priapism (prolonged erection requiring surgery), inability to urinate, abnormal hormone secretion regulating urine volume, sugar in urine.
  • Swelling of face/mouth/eyes/lips, swelling of body/arms/legs, increased body temperature, changes in walking, chest pain, discomfort in chest, feeling unwell, hardened skin, falls, very low body temperature, chills, thirst, withdrawal symptoms, yellow skin and eyes (jaundice).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to paliperidone, risperidone, or any other ingredients in Psylipax.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience blood clots, especially in your legs (swelling, pain, redness), as these can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and trouble breathing.
  • If you have dementia and experience sudden changes in mental state, weakness, numbness in the face or limbs, or slurred speech, seek medical help immediately as these could be signs of a stroke.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you have a fever, stiff muscles, sweating, or confusion, as this could be a serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome.
  • If you are a man and experience a prolonged, painful erection, seek immediate medical help.

  • Tell your doctor if you have uncontrolled movements of your tongue, mouth, or face, as your treatment may need to be stopped.
  • Get urgent medical help if you have a severe allergic reaction, which can include fever, swelling of your mouth, face, lips, or tongue, trouble breathing, itching, rash, and sometimes a drop in blood pressure.
  • If you are having eye surgery, tell your eye doctor that you are taking this medicine, as it can cause problems during cataract surgery.
  • Tell your doctor if you know you have dangerously low white blood cell counts, which are needed to fight infections.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain. Your weight will be checked regularly.
  • Your doctor will check for high blood sugar if you have diabetes or are at risk of developing it.
  • This medicine might make your body less able to vomit, which could hide signs of poisoning or other health issues.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless discussed with your doctor. It can harm the baby.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, extreme tiredness, or vision problems, so be careful when driving or using machines.
