Psylipax is a medicine used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia in adults, particularly after their condition has been stable with paliperidone or risperidone medication.

How to Use

Dosage

The first dose is 150 mg and the second is 100 mg, given about one week apart. After that, you will receive 25-150 mg once a month. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on your symptoms or kidney function.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow, deep injection into your upper arm or buttock muscle. It should not be given into a vein or under the skin.

Important

The maximum dose per monthly injection is 150 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty falling asleep or interrupted sleep.
  • Flu-like symptoms, urinary tract infection, feeling unwell.
  • Increased levels of a hormone called prolactin (which can cause breast swelling/tenderness, milk production, and sexual problems).
  • High blood sugar, weight gain, weight loss, decreased appetite.
  • Irritability, depression, anxiety.
  • Slow or difficult movements, stiff muscles, shaking, restlessness, involuntary muscle movements (like twitches or spasms).
  • Dizziness, headache.
  • Fast heart rate, high blood pressure.
  • Cough, stuffy nose.
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, toothache.
  • Muscle or bone pain, back pain, joint pain.
  • Missed periods.
  • Fever, weakness, tiredness.
  • Reactions at the injection site like itching, pain, or swelling.
RARE
  • Eye inflammation.
  • Decreased white blood cells (important for fighting infections), decreased platelets (cells that help blood clot).
  • Head tremor.
  • Problems with the hormone that controls urine volume, sugar in urine.
  • Stiff and unresponsive state while awake (catatonia), walking in sleep, confusion, lack of feelings, inability to have an orgasm.
  • Glaucoma (increased eye pressure), problems with eye movement, rolling eyes, sensitivity to light, increased tear production, red eyes.
  • Irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation), other heart rhythm problems.
  • Flushing (warm sensation and redness of skin), swelling of face and neck.
  • Trouble breathing during sleep (sleep apnea), lung congestion, airway congestion, wheezing.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), swollen tongue, inability to control bowel movements, very hard stool, bowel blockage, chapped lips.
  • Drug rash, thickened skin, dandruff, severe or life-threatening rashes with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Muscle fiber breakdown and muscle pain (rhabdomyolysis).
  • Inability to urinate.
  • Breast discomfort, breast enlargement, vaginal discharge.
  • Very low body temperature, chills, thirst, withdrawal symptoms, coma due to uncontrolled diabetes, lack of oxygen in parts of the body (due to reduced blood flow), yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to paliperidone, risperidone, or any of its other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have blood clots, especially in your legs (swelling, pain, redness) or lungs (chest pain, trouble breathing).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience a sudden change in mental state, weakness, numbness on one side of your face or body, or slurred speech, as these could be signs of a stroke.
  • Get urgent medical care if you have fever, stiff muscles, sweating, or confusion (a condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • If you are a man and experience a prolonged or painful erection (priapism), get immediate medical attention.

  • Tell your doctor if you have uncontrolled movements of your tongue, mouth, or face; your doctor may need to stop this medicine.
  • Seek emergency medical care for a severe allergic reaction, which may include fever, swelling of your mouth, face, lips, or tongue, shortness of breath, itching, rash, and sometimes a drop in blood pressure.
  • Inform your eye doctor that you are using this medicine if you are scheduled for eye surgery.
  • Your doctor may need to check your white blood cell count if you have very low levels of certain white blood cells needed to fight infections.
  • This medicine can cause weight gain; your weight will be checked regularly. It can also cause or worsen diabetes, so blood sugar levels will be monitored.
  • Avoid alcohol while using this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor says it's safe.
  • Be careful when driving or operating machinery, as this medicine can cause dizziness, extreme tiredness, or vision problems.
