How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose based on blood tests.

Method

The medicine is given as a slow injection or infusion into a vein over about 10 minutes.

Important

A single dose should not exceed 5 ml (50 mg) over a 10-minute period.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling of face and lips, heart problems, fainting).
  • High blood pressure in the lungs (severe breathing difficulties).
  • Severe, prolonged low blood pressure (slow heart rate, bluish skin, dizziness or fainting, especially if given too quickly).
COMMON
  • Low blood pressure (dizziness).
  • Vomiting.
  • Back pain.
  • Bleeding.
  • Allergic skin reaction (hives or rash, feeling warm, red skin, shortness of breath, deep skin swelling, sometimes swelling of the tongue and airways).

Important Warnings

  • If you are allergic to protamine sulfate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • If you have diabetes and use insulin (especially protamine insulin).
  • If you are allergic to fish.
  • If you are a man and have had infertility or a vasectomy.
  • If you have been treated before with protamine sulfate, protamine insulin, or protamine chloride.
