How to Use

Dosage

Take one tablet daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than one tablet per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Erection problems (impotence)
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Reduced amount of semen during ejaculation
RARE
  • Skin rash
  • Ejaculation problems
  • Swelling and/or tenderness of breasts
  • Allergic reactions such as itching, hives, and swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or face (angioedema)
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Testicular pain
  • Blood in semen
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Erection or ejaculation problems that continued after stopping treatment
  • Male infertility and/or poor semen quality (reported to improve after stopping treatment)
  • Depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts
  • Decreased sex drive that continued after stopping treatment
  • Male breast cancer

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Proscar if you are allergic to finasteride or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Proscar is not for use by women or children.
  • If you have trouble emptying your bladder completely or if your urine flow is significantly weak, your doctor should check your urinary tract regularly for blockages.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you notice any changes in your breast tissue, such as lumps, pain, enlargement, or nipple discharge, as these can be signs of a serious condition like breast cancer.
  • Proscar can affect the results of a blood test called a PSA test. If you are having a PSA test, tell your doctor that you are taking Proscar.

  • If your partner is pregnant or might become pregnant, you should avoid exposing her to your semen, as it may contain small amounts of the medicine.
  • Mood changes, including feeling down, depression, and rarely thoughts of self-harm, have been reported. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor as soon as possible for advice.
  • Pregnant women or women who could become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken Proscar tablets, as the active ingredient can cause abnormalities in a baby boy's genitals if absorbed through the skin or mouth.
