How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose for adults is 40 mg, taken 2 to 3 times a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water before meals. Do not chew them.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults can be up to 320 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Cold fingers and toes
  • Slow heartbeat, dizziness when standing up, fainting, palpitations, irregular heartbeat, worsening of heart failure
  • Numbness and tingling in fingers followed by warmth and pain (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Sleep problems/nightmares, especially at the start of treatment: dizziness, confusion
  • Tiredness and/or fatigue (often temporary)
  • Allergic skin reactions: redness, itching, rash, hair loss
RARE
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation
  • Muscle weakness
  • Sudden narrowing of airways or worsening breathing difficulties, sometimes leading to death, especially if you have or have had asthma
  • Heart failure, worsening of heart disease
  • Swelling of the skin, which may appear on the face, tongue, throat, abdomen, arms, and legs (angioedema)
  • Dizziness, especially when standing up
  • Mood changes
  • Confusion
  • Psychosis or hallucinations (after stopping the medicine too quickly)
  • Paresthesia (abnormal sensations, typically tingling and burning)
  • Vision disturbances
  • Dry eyes
  • Changes in blood cell counts and types, such as a decrease in platelets (thrombocytopenia), which can make you bruise or bleed more easily
  • Purple spots on the skin (purpura), widespread hair loss, psoriasis-like skin reactions (even years later), worsening of psoriasis
  • Dry mouth
  • Lack or severe decrease of white blood cells
  • Temporary increase of certain white blood cells (transient eosinophilia)
  • Worsening of a specific muscle weakness disease (myasthenia gravis), headache, depression
  • Low blood sugar levels may occur in patients with or without diabetes, including elderly patients, dialysis patients, or those taking diabetes medication. It may also occur in patients who are fasting or have long-term liver disease.
  • Worsening of diabetes, changes in certain blood fat levels (decreased HDL cholesterol, increased triglycerides)
  • Excessive sweating
  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis)
  • Muscle pain, muscle cramps
  • In long-term treatment: joint disease
  • Worsening kidney function in severe kidney failure
  • Sexual desire disorders and erectile dysfunction
  • Increase in certain blood values (ALAT, ASAT, ANA).
  • Shortness of breath or breathlessness (dyspnea)
  • Depression
  • Seizures due to low blood sugar in newborns, infants, and children

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to propranolol hydrochloride or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have untreated or poorly controlled heart failure.
  • Do not use if you have heart problems like shock caused by heart issues, severe heart conduction problems, or a very slow or irregular heartbeat.
  • Do not use if you have asthma, wheezing, or other breathing difficulties.
  • Do not use if you have very low blood pressure.
