How to Use

Dosage

Usually, adults take 40 mg two to three times a day. Your doctor will tell you the right dose for your condition.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water before meals. Do not chew them. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to.

Important

The maximum daily dose is typically 320 mg, but your doctor will set your limit.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Cold fingers and toes.
  • Slow heart rate, dizziness when standing up, worsening heart problems.
  • Numbness, tingling, and coldness in fingers or toes (Raynaud's phenomenon).
  • Sleep problems or nightmares, especially at the start of treatment.
  • Feeling tired or weak.
  • Skin reactions like redness, itching, rash, or hair loss.
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Dizziness, confusion.
RARE
  • Sudden worsening of breathing problems, especially if you have asthma.
  • Severe swelling of face, tongue, or throat (angioedema).
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations), confusion, or mood changes, especially if you stop the medicine too fast.
  • Strange feelings like pins and needles.
  • Vision problems or dry eyes.
  • Easier bruising or bleeding.
  • Red spots on skin, hair loss, or worsening psoriasis.
  • Very low white blood cell count.
  • Worsening muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis), headache, depression.
  • Very low blood sugar, especially if fasting or have diabetes.
  • Worsening kidney problems.
  • Problems with sexual desire or erection.
  • Joint pain (long-term use).
  • Excessive sweating.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to propranolol hydrochloride or any other ingredient in the tablets.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have uncontrolled heart failure, very slow or irregular heartbeat, or other serious heart problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have asthma or severe breathing difficulties.
  • If you have diabetes, this medicine can hide the signs of low blood sugar. Be careful and check your blood sugar often.
  • Do not use this medicine with certain calcium channel blockers like verapamil or diltiazem, as it can cause very low blood pressure and a very slow heart rate.
