How to Use

Dosage

Typically, you start with 40 mg 2-3 times a day. Your doctor may increase the dose over time.

Method

Take tablets with water before meals. Swallow whole, do not chew. Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor's advice.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 320 mg. Your doctor will determine your specific dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Cold fingers and toes
  • Slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, feeling dizzy or faint
  • Numbness or tingling in fingers, often with coldness and pain (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Sleep problems, nightmares, dizziness, or confusion (especially when starting treatment)
  • Feeling tired or fatigued
  • Allergic skin reactions such as redness, itching, rash, or hair loss
RARE
  • Sudden narrowing of airways or worsening of breathing problems, especially if you have asthma
  • Worsening of heart failure or other heart problems
  • Swelling of the skin on the face, tongue, throat, stomach, arms, and legs (angioedema)
  • Dizziness, especially when standing up
  • Mood changes, confusion, psychosis, or hallucinations
  • Vision problems or dry eyes
  • Changes in blood cell counts, such as fewer platelets which can lead to easier bruising or bleeding
  • Skin rash (purpura), widespread hair loss, or worsening of psoriasis-like skin reactions
  • Dry mouth

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to propranolol hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe, uncontrolled heart failure, a very slow or irregular heartbeat, or other serious heart problems.
  • Do not use if you have asthma or severe breathing difficulties.
  • Do not use if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, as this medicine can affect your blood sugar levels.
