Method

This medicine is given as an injection or a continuous drip into a vein by a trained healthcare professional.

Important

Your doctor will decide the maximum amount you receive each day; it can be given for up to 7 days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure, which might need more fluids or a slower drip.
  • Very slow heartbeat, which can sometimes be serious.
  • Pain at the injection site when the medicine is first given.
  • Short pauses in breathing.
  • Headache when waking up.
  • Feeling sick or throwing up when waking up.
RARE
  • Seizures, like epilepsy.
  • Blood clots in veins or inflammation of the veins where the medicine was injected.
  • Bad allergic reactions, like swelling in your face or throat, trouble breathing, red skin, or very low blood pressure.
  • Becoming unconscious again after surgery.
  • Fluid buildup in the lungs.
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
  • A very serious condition called 'propofol infusion syndrome' which can cause muscle breakdown, heart problems, and kidney issues, and can be fatal.
  • Liver problems, such as inflammation or liver failure (symptoms like yellow skin/eyes, itching, dark urine, stomach pain).
  • Heart failure or cardiac arrest (heart stops).
  • Tissue damage if the medicine is accidentally injected outside a vein.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to propofol, soy, peanuts, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • This medicine should not be used to calm down patients aged 16 or younger in intensive care.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a severe head injury, a mitochondrial disease, problems with fat metabolism, or serious heart, kidney, or liver problems.
