How to Use

Dosage

One Propess vaginal insert.

Method

A doctor or nurse will insert one Propess device into your vagina near your cervix. You will need to lie down for 20-30 minutes after insertion.

Important

The device can stay in for a maximum of 24 hours.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Increased uterine contractions, which may or may not affect the baby.
  • Fetal distress and/or the baby's heart rate becoming faster or slower.
  • Discolored amniotic fluid.
RARE
  • Headache.
  • Decreased blood pressure.
  • Breathing difficulties in the newborn right after birth.
  • High bilirubin levels in the newborn's blood (can cause yellow skin/eyes).
  • Itching.
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding after childbirth.
  • Premature detachment of the placenta from the uterine wall before birth.
  • Poor general condition of the newborn immediately after birth.
  • Slow progression of labor.
  • Inflammation of the inner membranes of the uterus.
  • Uterus does not contract normally after childbirth due to lack of contractions.
  • Burning sensation in the genital area.
  • Fever.
  • Fetal death, stillbirth, and newborn death (neonatal death), especially after severe events like uterine rupture.
  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a rare blood clotting disorder that can cause blood clots and increase bleeding risk.
  • Amniotic fluid entering the mother's bloodstream during labor, which can block blood vessels. This is called amniotic fluid embolism and can cause symptoms like shortness of breath, low blood pressure, anxiety, chills, life-threatening blood clotting issues, seizures, coma, bleeding, fluid in the lungs, and fetal distress like low heart rate.
  • Hypersensitivity and severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic reaction), which may include breathing difficulties, shortness of breath, fast or weak pulse, dizziness, skin redness, or rash.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Swelling of the genitals.
  • Uterine rupture.

Important Warnings

  • If your baby's head is too large for birth.
  • If your baby is not in the right position for a vaginal birth.
  • If your baby is not doing well or is in distress.
  • If you have had previous surgery on your cervix or it has torn.
  • If you have an untreated infection in your pelvic area.

  • If you are allergic to dinoprostone or any other ingredient in Propess.

  • If your contractions are too strong or last too long.
  • If your baby shows signs of distress.
  • If you experience side effects.
