How to Use

Dosage

A doctor will carefully choose your dose based on your age, weight, and health condition.

Method

Profast is given as an injection or drip into a vein, usually in your hand or arm.

Important

Profast treatment usually lasts no longer than 7 days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Local pain at the injection site.
  • Involuntary movements and muscle twitching when anesthesia starts.
  • Headache when waking up.
  • Slow heart rate.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Fast breathing and coughing when anesthesia starts.
  • Temporary stop in breathing when anesthesia starts.
  • Hiccups when anesthesia starts.
  • Feeling sick (nausea) and throwing up (vomiting) when waking up.
  • Hot flashes when anesthesia starts.
RARE
  • Blood clots in veins and vein inflammation.
  • Cough during anesthesia.
  • Dizziness, chills, and feeling cold when waking up.
  • Seizure-like episodes with convulsions and muscle spasms during anesthesia or waking up.
  • Cough when waking up.
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) like swelling, trouble breathing, skin redness, and very low blood pressure.
  • Being unconscious after surgery.
  • Fluid in the lungs causing severe shortness of breath.
  • Swelling of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
  • Discolored urine after long-term Profast use.
  • Feeling too free or uninhibited (sexual disinhibition).
  • Tissue damage.
  • Fever after surgery.
  • Too much acid in the blood.
  • High levels of potassium in the blood.
  • High levels of fats in the blood.
  • Feeling very happy (euphoria) when waking up.
  • Misusing or depending on the medicine.
  • Involuntary movements.
  • Irregular heartbeats.
  • Heart not pumping enough blood.
  • Breathing problems (weak breathing, depends on dose).
  • Enlarged liver.
  • Breakdown of muscle tissue.
  • Kidney problems.
  • Pain or swelling if the medicine leaks outside the vein.
  • Long-lasting, often painful erections.
  • Changes in heart rhythm on an ECG.
  • Liver inflammation or acute liver failure (symptoms like yellow skin/eyes, itching, dark urine, stomach pain, loss of appetite).
  • Dizziness (if given with lidocaine).
  • Vomiting (if given with lidocaine).
  • Feeling sleepy (if given with lidocaine).
  • Convulsions (if given with lidocaine).
  • Slow heart rate (if given with lidocaine).
  • Irregular heartbeats (if given with lidocaine).
  • Shock (if given with lidocaine).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to propofol, soy, peanuts, or other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Profast should not be used for sedation in intensive care for patients younger than 16 years old.
  • Profast 20 mg/ml should not be used for anesthesia in children under 3 years old.
  • Do not drive or use machines until you are fully awake and sure the medicine's effects have passed. You might feel sleepy.
  • Only use during pregnancy if absolutely necessary.

  • Breastfeeding mothers should stop breastfeeding for 24 hours after Profast and throw away breast milk.
  • Tell your doctor about any past or current health problems like seizures, high fat levels in your blood, heart, lung, kidney, or liver issues, or if you have generally felt unwell.
