How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your exact dose based on your age, weight, and general health.

Method

Profast is given as an injection or a continuous drip (infusion) into a vein, usually in your hand or arm.

Important

Profast treatment usually lasts no longer than 7 days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain at the injection site.
  • Involuntary movements or muscle twitching as you fall asleep.
  • Headache when waking up.
  • Slow heartbeat.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Fast breathing, coughing, or a temporary stop in breathing as you fall asleep.
  • Hiccups as you fall asleep.
  • Feeling sick or throwing up when waking up.
  • Hot flashes as you fall asleep.
RARE
  • Blood clots or inflamed veins.
  • Cough during treatment.
  • Dizziness, chills, or feeling cold when waking up.
  • Seizure-like episodes with muscle spasms (fits).
  • Severe allergic reactions, which can include swelling, breathing problems, red skin, or very low blood pressure.
  • Unconsciousness after surgery.
  • Fluid in the lungs causing severe shortness of breath.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Discolored urine after long-term use.
  • Feeling sexually uninhibited.
  • Tissue damage if the medicine leaks out of the vein.
  • Fever after surgery.
  • Too much acid in your blood.
  • High potassium or fat levels in your blood.
  • Feeling very happy when waking up.
  • Drug abuse or dependence.
  • Irregular heartbeat or heart failure.
  • Stopped breathing (depending on the dose).
  • Enlarged liver or liver inflammation/failure (symptoms like yellow skin/eyes, itching, dark urine, stomach pain, loss of appetite).
  • Muscle breakdown.
  • Kidney failure.
  • Painful, long-lasting erection.
  • Changes in your heart tracing (ECG).
  • If given with lidocaine, you might experience: vomiting, drowsiness, convulsions, or shock.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Profast if you are allergic to propofol, soy, or peanuts.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had seizures, high blood fat levels, or problems with your heart, lungs, kidneys, or liver.
  • You should not drive or use machines until you are fully awake and feel normal after receiving Profast.
  • Do not drink alcohol after receiving Profast.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your doctor. You should not breastfeed for 24 hours after treatment.
