Produodopa contains two active ingredients, foslevodopa and foscarbidopa, and is used to treat Parkinson's disease.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose and how long you need it. It is usually given as a continuous maintenance dose.

Method

Produodopa is given as an injection under the skin, usually in the stomach area, using an infusion pump. The pump delivers the medicine continuously for 24 hours. Avoid using the area 5 cm around your navel.

Important

Your doctor will set the maximum daily dose and any extra doses based on your individual needs.

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Problems with thinking, learning, and memory (cognitive disorders)
  • Involuntary movements (dyskinesia)
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms of the eyes, head, neck, and body (dystonia)
  • Headache
  • Reduced sense of touch, tingling or numbness, burning or prickling sensation in hands, arms, legs or feet (hypoesthesia, paresthesia)
  • Increasing weakness, pain, numbness, or reduced sensation in fingers or toes (polyneuropathy)
  • Rapid or unexpected return of Parkinson's symptoms (on-off phenomenon)
  • Sudden sleep attacks, severe drowsiness, sleep disorders
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness when standing up or changing position due to low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension). Always change position slowly.

  • Nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting
  • Incontinence (inability to control urination)
  • Urinary retention (difficulty emptying bladder)

  • Increased levels of amino acids (building blocks of proteins)

  • Dopamine dysregulation syndrome (compulsive need to use higher doses of Produodopa than necessary to relieve motor symptoms)
  • Dark urine
  • Hoarse voice, chest pain
  • Hair loss, red skin, hives
  • Increased salivation
  • Changes in gait (way of walking)
  • Suicide attempt, suicide
  • Low white blood cell count or changes in blood cell count that may cause bleeding
  • Feeling of euphoria, increased sexual desire, dementia, fear
  • Difficulty controlling movements and severe involuntary movements
  • Difficulty opening eyes, double vision, blurred vision, optic nerve damage (ischemic optic neuropathy)
  • Irregular heartbeat that you can feel (palpitations)
  • Confusion
  • Nightmares
  • Swelling of a vein
  • Teeth grinding
  • Painful and prolonged erection
  • Unusual skin marks or moles that appear or worsen, or skin cancer (melanoma)
  • Dark saliva or sweat, burning tongue, hiccups
  • Unusual thoughts
  • Abnormal breathing

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to foslevodopa, foscarbidopa, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have narrow-angle glaucoma (eye disease).
  • Do not use if you have severe heart problems or irregular heartbeats.
  • Do not use if you have recently had a stroke.
  • Do not use if you are taking certain MAO inhibitors (e.g., moclobemide, phenelzine). You must stop taking these at least two weeks before starting Produodopa.

  • Do not use if you have an adrenal gland tumor called pheochromocytoma.
  • Do not use if you have certain hormonal problems, like high cortisol (Cushing's syndrome) or an overactive thyroid.
  • Do not use if you have had skin cancer or have suspicious moles that a doctor has not checked.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a history of heart attack, blood clots, or irregular heartbeats.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have lung problems like asthma.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a history of hormonal problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a history of depression, suicidal thoughts, or other mental health issues.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have open-angle glaucoma.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had stomach ulcers.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had seizures.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are on a low-sodium diet.
  • Talk to your doctor if you notice skin changes at the infusion site, like redness, warmth, swelling, pain, or discoloration.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have increasing weakness, pain, numbness, or tingling in your fingers or toes (polyneuropathy).
  • Tell your doctor if you notice involuntary movements (dyskinesia) in your limbs, back, neck, or jaw, or if your movements become slower or stiffer.
  • Do not stop or rapidly reduce your dose of Produodopa unless your doctor tells you to, as this can cause a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family notice new or increased urges or behaviors that are unusual for you, such as gambling, overeating, excessive spending, or increased sexual urges. These are called impulse control disorders.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness or sudden sleep attacks. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Produodopa may lower your blood pressure, causing dizziness or lightheadedness.
