Method

The medicine is given into a vein (intravenously) or during hemodialysis.

Important

For adults, the typical maximum daily amount is about 48-60 liters; your doctor will determine the exact amount.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Changes in blood salt levels (electrolyte imbalance), such as low phosphate or low potassium.
  • Too much or too little bicarbonate in the blood (metabolic alkalosis or acidosis).
  • Too much or too little fluid in the body (hypervolemia or hypovolemia).
  • High blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia).
  • Nausea (feeling sick).
  • Vomiting (being sick).
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Prismasol or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have very low potassium or very high bicarbonate levels in your blood.
  • Do not use hemofiltration or dialysis with this medicine if you have severe kidney failure with high body breakdown (hypercatabolism), insufficient blood pressure in your access vein, or if you have a high risk of bleeding due to blood thinners.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a known allergy to corn or corn products, as this medicine may contain corn-related substances.
  • If you develop any signs of an allergic reaction (like rash, swelling, or trouble breathing), stop using this medicine immediately and seek medical help.

  • Your blood sugar levels will be closely monitored, especially if you have diabetes.
