How to Use

Dosage

A single dose of 0.5 ml.

Method

The vaccine is given as an injection under the skin or into a muscle in the upper arm or outer upper part of the thigh.

Important

This is a single-dose vaccine, not a daily medication, so there is no maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

  • Pain and redness at the injection site
  • Fever (38 °C or more)
  • Swelling at the injection site in adolescents and adults
  • Swelling at the injection site in children
  • High fever (over 39.5 °C)
  • Irritability
  • Rash
RARE
  • Unusual crying, nervousness, difficulty sleeping
  • General discomfort, drowsiness, fatigue
  • Swelling of the salivary glands (parotid gland)
  • Diarrhea, vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Runny nose
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Middle ear infection
  • Febrile seizures
  • Cough
  • Bronchitis
  • Inflammation of the brain (encephalitis)
  • Inflammation of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves
  • Stroke
  • Inflammation of some nerves (Guillain-Barré syndrome)
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., itchy rash, swelling of face/tongue, difficulty breathing, sudden drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness)
  • Narrowing or blockage of blood vessels
  • Pinpoint bleeding or easy bruising due to low platelet count
  • Erythema multiforme (red, itchy patches resembling measles)
  • Chickenpox-like rash
  • Herpes zoster (shingles)
  • Measles and mumps-like symptoms (e.g., temporary painful testicular swelling, swollen neck glands)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to any of the vaccine's ingredients. Symptoms include an itchy rash, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face or tongue.
  • Do not take if you have had an allergic reaction to a previous measles, mumps, rubella, or chickenpox vaccine.
  • Do not take if you have an allergy to neomycin (an antibiotic). Talk to your doctor first.
  • Do not take if you have a severe infection with high fever. Vaccination may be postponed until you have recovered.
  • Do not take if you have a disease (such as HIV/AIDS) that weakens your immune system, or if you are taking medications that suppress the immune system (excluding low-dose corticosteroids).

  • Do not take if you are pregnant, and avoid becoming pregnant for one month after vaccination.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of convulsions or febrile seizures. You will be monitored after vaccination.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a severe allergic reaction to egg protein.
  • Tell your doctor if a previous measles, mumps, or rubella vaccine caused easy bruising or prolonged bleeding.
  • Avoid salicylates (like aspirin) for 6 weeks after vaccination.
