How to Use

Dosage

Typically 10 mg per dose, up to 3 times daily.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as a slow injection into a vein (over at least 3 minutes) or into a muscle.

Important

The maximum dose per day is 30 mg or 0.5 mg per kilogram of body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness
  • Feeling sad or depressed
  • Jerky or shaky movements you can't control
  • Stiffness or trembling, like in Parkinson's disease
  • Restlessness
  • Low blood pressure (especially if given into a vein)
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling weak
RARE
  • Hormone changes that can cause milk production or irregular periods
  • Vision problems or uncontrolled eye movements
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations)
  • Reduced awareness or confusion
  • Slow heartbeat or cardiac arrest (especially when injected into a vein)
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Severe allergic reactions (like face swelling, trouble breathing)
  • Very high blood pressure
  • Thoughts of harming yourself

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have bleeding, a blockage, or a tear in your stomach or intestines.
  • Do not use if you have a specific adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma), epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, or have had involuntary muscle spasms from previous medication.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 1 year old.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines for Parkinson's disease, have heart problems, or kidney or liver issues.

  • Do not use this medicine for more than 3 months, and wait at least 6 hours between doses.
  • Avoid alcohol and be careful when driving or operating machinery, as this medicine can cause drowsiness or affect your alertness.
  • Ask your doctor if you are pregnant, and avoid breastfeeding while using this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Consider potential interactions especially with antipsychotics and dopamine agonists such as levodopa. Significant adverse effects include extrapyramidal symptoms and confusion. (updated 20.5.2024)
