Primaspan gastro-resistant tablets contain acetylsalicylic acid to prevent blood clots from forming in the blood vessels of the heart and brain, and can also be used as first aid for a heart attack.

How to Use

Dosage

For preventing blood clots, the usual dose is 100–300 mg per day, as directed by your doctor.

Method

Swallow gastro-resistant tablets whole with plenty of liquid, such as a glass of water. For a heart attack, chew or crush the tablets (250–500 mg) for quick absorption.

Important

The maximum daily dose is generally 500 mg for short-term, acute situations as directed by a doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Nosebleeds, runny nose
  • Stomach or intestinal pain, inflammation, or bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Rash, itching
  • Bleeding in urinary or genital organs
RARE
  • Anemia (low red blood cells) caused by bleeding or red blood cell breakdown
  • Serious bleeding, such as prolonged or heavy bleeding, blood in vomit (like coffee grounds), or black, tarry stools
  • Signs of brain or intracranial bleeding, like unusually severe headache with vomiting, one-sided weakness, seizures, or decreased consciousness
  • Unusual weakness, tiredness, paleness, or shortness of breath (which can be signs of internal bleeding)
  • Bruises
  • Nasal congestion
  • Gum bleeding, ulcers in the stomach or gut, or a hole in the gut lining
  • Liver problems or liver failure (may show as high liver enzymes in blood tests)
  • Kidney problems or acute kidney failure
  • Hives (itchy rash)
  • Severe allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, trouble swallowing or breathing, sudden drop in blood pressure, or anaphylactic shock (a very severe allergic reaction)
  • Heart and respiratory symptoms (in connection with an allergic reaction)
  • Bleeding during surgery
  • Respiratory disease
  • Bowel obstruction (a blockage in the intestines known as intestinal diaphragm disease, IDD)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) or other similar pain or anti-inflammatory medicines.
  • Do not take if you have severe asthma caused by salicylates or other anti-inflammatory medicines.
  • Do not take if you have a bleeding disorder (e.g., hemophilia) or a tendency to bleed easily.
  • Do not take if you currently have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver, kidney, or heart failure.

  • Do not take if you are using methotrexate at a dose of 15 mg or more per week.
  • Do not use doses over 100 mg per day during the last three months of pregnancy, as it can harm the unborn baby.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking blood thinning medicines (like warfarin or heparin), as Primaspan can increase their effects.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking other anti-inflammatory pain relievers (like ibuprofen or naproxen) or metamizole, as they can reduce Primaspan's clot-preventing effect.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart, liver, or kidney disease, as this medicine can increase swelling.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have long-term or recurring digestive tract diseases.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have asthma or long-term breathing problems, or if you've had allergic symptoms (like asthma, rash, or runny nose) from other anti-inflammatory medicines.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a rare blood disorder (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency) or gout.
  • Primaspan increases the risk of bleeding, which should be considered during surgical procedures.
  • Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 with viral infections (e.g., flu, chickenpox) without a doctor's advice, due to a serious risk called Reye's syndrome.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Initiation of treatment under supervision of a physician. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
