How to Use

Dosage

The usual daily dose is between 150 mg and 600 mg.

Method

Take the capsules whole with water, either two or three times a day, as prescribed by your doctor. If taken twice daily, take once in the morning and once in the evening. If taken three times daily, take once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once in the evening, roughly at the same times each day.

Important

Do not take more than 600 mg in a single day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

  • Breathing difficulties or shallow breathing
  • Skin rash or hives
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Liver failure or hepatitis (liver inflammation)

Important Warnings

  • If you get swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread rash, contact your doctor immediately as these could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you notice severe skin reactions like red patches with blisters, skin peeling, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes (such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • This medicine can make you dizzy or sleepy, which may increase your risk of falling, especially if you are elderly. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any changes in your eyesight, such as blurred vision or loss of vision.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor right away.

  • Some people may become dependent on this medicine. If you notice signs of dependence (e.g., needing more than prescribed, feeling unwell when stopping), talk to your doctor.
  • Do not drive or use complex machines until you know how this medicine affects your ability to perform these tasks.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
