How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe the right dose for you, usually 150–600 mg per day.

Method

Take the capsules by mouth with water, either 2 or 3 times a day as your doctor instructs. If taking twice daily, take one dose in the morning and one in the evening. If taking three times daily, take one dose in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 600 mg.

Important Warnings

  • If you have signs of an allergic reaction like swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread rash, seek medical help right away.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get severe skin reactions like red, flat, target-like patches or blistering and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and sleepiness, which might increase the risk of falls, especially in older people. Be careful until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you notice any changes in your vision, such as blurred vision or vision loss, as these are usually temporary.
  • If you have diabetes and gain weight while taking this medicine, your diabetes medication might need to be adjusted.

  • Some side effects, like sleepiness, may be worse if you take other medicines for pain or muscle spasms, especially if you have a spinal cord injury. Tell your doctor about all your medicines.
  • Some patients, especially older ones with heart problems, have had heart failure. Tell your doctor if you have a heart condition before starting this medicine.
  • If you notice that you are urinating less while taking this medicine, tell your doctor. This could be a sign of kidney problems, which may improve if you stop the medicine.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor right away.
  • If you take this medicine with other drugs that cause constipation (like some pain medicines), you might have stomach problems. Tell your doctor if you have constipation, especially if you usually get it.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever abused alcohol, prescription medicines, or illegal drugs, as you might have a higher risk of becoming dependent on this medicine.
  • Seizures have occurred during or shortly after stopping this medicine. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience seizures.
  • Some patients with other serious illnesses (like liver or kidney disease) have reported impaired brain function. Tell your doctor if you have any serious medical conditions.
  • Breathing problems have been reported. If you have nerve or breathing problems, kidney failure, or are over 65, your doctor may adjust your dose. Contact your doctor if you have difficulty breathing or shallow breathing.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor tells you to. If you are a woman who can become pregnant, you must use effective birth control.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy, sleepy, or affect your concentration. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
