How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the right dose for you, usually 150–600 mg per day.

Method

Take the capsules whole with water two or three times a day, as your doctor instructs. For twice a day, take one in the morning and one in the evening. For three times a day, take one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening.

Important

The maximum daily dose is generally 600 mg.

  • Allergic reactions that may include difficulty breathing, eye inflammation, and severe skin reactions characterized by reddish, flat, target-like or ring-shaped spots with blisters in the center; peeling skin, sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes. These severe rashes may be preceded by fever and flu-like symptoms (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Parkinsonism (symptoms resembling Parkinson's disease), such as tremor, slowed movements (bradykinesia), and stiffness (muscle rigidity).
  • Liver failure
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)

Important Warnings

  • If you experience swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread rash, contact your doctor immediately as these may be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Severe skin rashes, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, have been reported. Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical attention if you notice any severe skin reactions.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and sleepiness, which may increase the risk of falls, especially in older people. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • This medicine may cause blurred vision, loss of vision, or other eye changes. These are usually temporary. Tell your doctor right away if your vision changes.
  • Some diabetes patients may need to change their diabetes medication if they gain weight while taking this medicine.

  • Certain side effects, such as drowsiness, may be more common if you have a spinal cord injury and are taking other medicines for pain or spasticity, as these medicines can have similar effects and their combined use can increase these effects.
  • Some patients have reported heart failure while taking this medicine, usually older patients with heart or blood vessel problems. Tell your doctor if you have had heart disease before starting this medicine.
  • Kidney failure has been reported in some patients. If you notice a decrease in urination while taking this medicine, tell your doctor. Stopping the medicine might change the situation.
  • Some patients taking epilepsy medicines, including this one, have had thoughts of harming themselves or suicidal thoughts. If you have these thoughts, contact your doctor right away.
  • If you take this medicine with other medicines that can cause constipation (like some pain relievers), you might experience stomach problems. Tell your doctor if you have constipation, especially if you are prone to it.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever misused alcohol, prescription medicines, or drugs, as this may increase your risk of becoming dependent on this medicine.
  • Seizures have occurred during or shortly after stopping this medicine. If you have seizures, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Cases of decreased brain function have been reported in some patients taking this medicine, especially those with other underlying health conditions. Tell your doctor if you have had any severe illness, such as liver or kidney disease.
  • Breathing problems have been reported. If you have nerve problems, breathing problems, kidney problems, or are over 65, your doctor may adjust your dose. Contact your doctor if you have difficulty breathing or shallow breathing.
  • You may become dependent on this medicine. You might have withdrawal symptoms if you stop using it. Talk to your doctor if you are worried about becoming dependent.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
