How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, which is usually between 150 mg and 600 mg per day.

Method

Take the capsules whole with water, either two or three times a day at about the same times each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is typically 600 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling dizzy or sleepy
  • Head pain
  • Feeling hungrier than usual
  • Mood changes, like feeling unusually happy or irritable
  • Feeling confused or disoriented
  • Decreased interest in sex
  • Memory problems, like difficulty remembering things or memory loss
  • Shaking or tremors
  • Difficulty speaking clearly
  • Prickling or numb feeling
  • Feeling very tired, lethargic, or having trouble sleeping
  • Feeling abnormal
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Feeling off balance, vertigo, or falling
  • Dry mouth
  • Stomach problems like constipation, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, nausea, or bloated stomach
  • Trouble getting or keeping an erection
  • Swelling in your body, especially arms and legs
  • Feeling like you are drunk or trouble walking normally
  • Gaining weight
  • Muscle cramps, joint pain, back pain, limb pain, or sore throat
RARE
  • Loss of appetite or weight loss
  • Low or high blood sugar
  • Stronger mood changes like restlessness, depression, agitation, strong anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, or aggression
  • Difficulty thinking, finding words, or abnormal dreams
  • Increased interest in sex or sexual problems like inability to orgasm or delayed ejaculation
  • Various eye problems like dry eyes, swollen eyes, eye pain, less sharp vision, watery eyes, eye irritation, or changes in how you see (e.g., tunnel vision, flashes of light, shaking objects, loss of vision)
  • Heart and circulation problems like irregular heartbeat, faster heart rate, low or high blood pressure, changes in heartbeat, or heart failure
  • Breathing problems, dry or stuffy nose, increased saliva, heartburn, numbness around the mouth, sweating, rash, chills, fever, muscle twitching, swollen joints, stiff muscles, or pain in muscles, neck, or chest
  • Urinary problems like difficulty or pain when urinating, leaking urine, less urine, or trouble emptying the bladder
  • Changes in blood or liver test results
  • Allergic reactions including facial swelling, itching, hives, runny nose, nosebleed, cough, snoring, painful periods, or cold hands and feet
  • Problems with sense of smell, wide pupils, crossed eyes, cold sweats, tight throat, swollen tongue, pancreas inflammation, trouble swallowing, slow or less body movement, trouble writing, fluid in the belly or lungs
  • Seizures, changes in heart's electrical activity, muscle damage, breast discharge, unusual breast growth (including in men), or missed periods
  • Kidney failure or low white blood cell count
  • Inappropriate behavior, thoughts of harming oneself or suicide
  • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes), Parkinson's-like symptoms (shaking, slow movement, stiff muscles), liver failure, or hepatitis
  • Becoming dependent on the medicine

Important Warnings

  • If you get swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread rash, contact your doctor right away. These could be signs of a severe allergic reaction.
  • Serious skin rashes, like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, have been reported. Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get any severe skin reaction, such as red patches, blisters, or peeling skin.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy and sleepy, which might cause falls, especially for older people. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if your vision becomes blurry, you lose vision, or notice other changes, as these are often temporary.
  • Some patients have reported heart failure, mostly older people with heart disease. Tell your doctor if you have any heart conditions before taking this medicine.

  • Kidney problems, including decreased urination, have been reported. Tell your doctor if you notice less urine production, as this may improve after stopping the medicine.
  • Some patients have had thoughts of harming themselves or committing suicide. If you have these thoughts, contact your doctor right away.
  • This medicine can cause dependence. If you are worried about becoming dependent, or if you feel you need to take more than prescribed or for reasons other than what it was given for, talk to your doctor.
  • Breathing difficulties, including shallow breathing, have been reported. If you have nerve problems, breathing problems, kidney issues, or are over 65, your doctor might adjust your dose. Contact your doctor if you have trouble breathing.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
