How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 150–600 mg per day, adjusted for your condition.

Method

Take the capsules whole with water, exactly as your doctor tells you. You will take them either two or three times a day, at about the same times each day (morning and evening, or morning, afternoon, and evening).

Important

Do not take more than 600 mg in one day.

  • Swelling, including swelling in arms and legs, weight gain
  • Feeling drunk, abnormal walking
  • Muscle cramps, joint pain, back pain, limb pain
  • Sore throat
RARE
  • Loss of appetite, weight loss, low or high blood sugar
  • Changes in self-perception, restlessness, depression, agitation, mood swings, difficulty finding words, hallucinations, unusual dreams, panic attacks, apathy, aggression, better mood, mental disorders, difficulty thinking
  • Increased sex drive, sexual problems like inability to orgasm, delayed ejaculation
  • Vision changes, unusual eye movements, tunnel vision, flashes of light, jerky movements, weak reflexes, hyperactivity, dizziness when standing, dry eyes, eye swelling, eye pain, reduced sharpness of vision, watery eyes, eye irritation, disturbed sense of smell, shaky vision, changes in depth perception, bright vision, loss of vision, widened pupils, cross-eyes
  • Irregular heartbeat, fast heartbeat, low or high blood pressure, changes in heart rhythm, heart failure
  • Flushing/redness, hot flashes, dry or blocked nose, increased saliva, heartburn, numbness around mouth, sweating, rash, chills, fever, muscle twitching, joint swelling, muscle stiffness, muscle pain, neck pain, chest pain, difficulty or pain when urinating, urinary incontinence, weakness, thirst, tight feeling in chest, cold hands and feet, cold sweat, tight feeling in throat, tongue swelling, pancreatitis, difficulty swallowing, slow or reduced movements, writing difficulties, fluid in abdomen, fluid in lungs, seizures, muscle damage, breast discharge, abnormal breast growth, breast enlargement in men
  • Changes in blood and liver tests (e.g., increased muscle enzymes, liver enzymes, creatinine, decreased platelets, neutrophils, potassium, decreased white blood cells)
  • Hypersensitivity reactions, face swelling, itching, hives, runny nose, nosebleeds, cough, snoring, severe allergic reactions including difficulty breathing, eye inflammation, and severe skin reactions (red patches, blisters, peeling skin, sores in mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes) which may be preceded by flu-like symptoms (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Painful periods, yellow skin and eyes (jaundice), Parkinson's-like symptoms (shaking, slow movement, muscle stiffness)
  • Liver failure, liver inflammation (hepatitis), drug dependence.

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor immediately if you have swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread rash. These could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you develop severe skin reactions like red patches on your body, often with blisters, skin peeling, or sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes. These could be serious skin conditions.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy and sleepy, which may increase the risk of falls, especially in older people. Be careful until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience blurred vision, loss of vision, or other changes in your eyesight. These changes are usually temporary.
  • If you have heart problems, especially if you are elderly, tell your doctor before taking this medicine, as it can worsen heart failure in some cases.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or if you notice a decrease in urination while taking this medicine.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor right away.
  • This medicine can be addictive. Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol, drug, or medicine abuse or dependence.
  • Seizures can occur during or soon after stopping this medicine. Contact your doctor immediately if you have a seizure.
  • Breathing difficulties have been reported. If you have nervous system problems, respiratory problems, kidney failure, or are over 65, tell your doctor, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Combining this medicine with other sedatives, such as opioid pain medicines (like oxycodone), anxiety medicines (like lorazepam), or alcohol can increase side effects like dizziness, sleepiness, and trouble concentrating. It can also lead to severe breathing problems, coma, and even death.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
