How to Use

Dosage

The usual daily dose is between 150 mg and 600 mg, adjusted for your condition.

Method

Take the capsules whole with water, as directed by your doctor. You will typically take this medicine two or three times a day, around the same time each day (morning and evening for twice daily; morning, afternoon, and evening for thrice daily).

Important

The maximum daily dose is 600 mg.

  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Parkinsonism (symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease, such as tremor, slow movement, and muscle stiffness)
  • Liver failure
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Drug dependence

Important Warnings

  • If you get swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread rash, contact your doctor immediately as these may be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis have been reported. Stop taking this medicine and seek medical help right away if you get any severe skin reactions.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness, which may increase the risk of falls in older people. Be careful until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • This medicine can cause blurred vision, loss of vision, or other changes in eyesight, which are usually temporary. Tell your doctor right away if your vision changes.
  • If you have diabetes and gain weight while taking this medicine, your diabetes medication may need to be adjusted.

  • Some patients, mostly older people with heart conditions, have reported heart failure. Tell your doctor if you have a heart condition before taking this medicine.
  • Kidney problems have been reported. If you notice less urination while taking this medicine, tell your doctor. Stopping the medicine might improve the situation.
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or suicide have been reported. If you have these thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you take this medicine with other drugs that cause constipation (like some pain relievers), you may experience stomach problems. Tell your doctor if you have constipation, especially if you are prone to it.
  • If you have a history of alcohol, prescription drug, or illegal drug abuse or dependence, tell your doctor before taking this medicine, as you may have a higher risk of becoming dependent on it.
  • Seizures have been reported during or shortly after stopping this medicine. If you experience seizures, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Problems with brain function (encephalopathy) have been reported in some patients, especially those with other serious medical conditions like liver or kidney disease. Tell your doctor if you have any serious medical conditions.
  • Breathing problems have been reported. If you have a nervous system disease, breathing problem, kidney problems, or are over 65, your doctor might adjust your dose. Contact your doctor if you have breathing difficulties or shallow breathing.
  • Some people can become dependent on this medicine. If you are worried about becoming dependent, talk to your doctor. Signs of dependence include needing to take more than prescribed, using for other reasons, or feeling unwell when you stop.
