How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the right dose for you, usually between 150 mg and 600 mg per day.

Method

Take the capsules whole with water. You can take them with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribes. The typical maximum daily dose is 600 mg.

  • Mental problems, trouble thinking, or increased sexual desire
  • Problems with sexual function (e.g., unable to have orgasm, delayed ejaculation)
  • Vision changes, abnormal eye movements, tunnel vision, or light flashes
  • Jerky movements, weakened reflexes, hyperactivity, or dizziness when standing
  • Sensitive skin, loss of taste, burning sensation, or shaking when moving
  • Decreased consciousness, loss of consciousness, fainting, or increased sensitivity to noise
  • Feeling unwell, dry eyes, eye swelling, eye pain, or tired eyes
  • Increased tearing, eye irritation, or abnormal sense of smell
  • Shaky vision, altered depth perception, altered light perception, or vision loss
  • Dilated pupils or crossed eyes
  • Heart rhythm problems, increased heart rate, low or high blood pressure
  • Changes in heart rhythm or heart failure
  • Flushing or hot flashes
  • Breathing difficulties, dry nose, or stuffy nose
  • Increased saliva, heartburn, or numbness around the mouth
  • Sweating, rash, chills, or fever
  • Muscle twitching, joint swelling, muscle stiffness, or muscle pain
  • Neck pain, breast tenderness, or chest pain
  • Difficulty or pain when urinating, incontinence, or kidney failure
  • Reduced urination or inability to urinate
  • Weakness, thirst, or a tight feeling in the chest
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., blood cell counts, kidney/liver values)
  • Pancreatitis or difficulty swallowing
  • Slow or decreased body movement, or difficulty writing
  • Fluid in the abdomen or lungs
  • Seizures or EKG changes (heart rhythm problems)
  • Muscle damage, breast discharge, or abnormal breast growth (including in men)
  • Missed periods
  • Decreased white blood cells
  • Inappropriate behavior, suicidal thoughts or behavior
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., difficulty breathing, eye inflammation, severe skin rash with blisters, peeling skin, or sores on the body/face/genitals)
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Parkinsonism (tremors, slow movement, muscle stiffness)
  • Liver failure or inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Dependence on this medicine

Important Warnings

  • If you experience swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread rash, contact your doctor immediately as these could be signs of an allergic reaction.
  • Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical help if you get severe skin reactions like red, flat, target-shaped spots or blisters on your body, peeling skin, or sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness, which may lead to falls, especially in older adults. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • This medicine can cause blurred vision, loss of vision, or other changes in your eyesight. Tell your doctor right away if your vision changes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, as this medicine has been linked to heart failure in some patients, mainly older adults with heart or blood vessel issues.

  • If you notice less urination while taking this medicine, tell your doctor, as kidney problems have been reported.
  • Some people taking this medicine have had thoughts of harming themselves or suicide. If you have these thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you take this medicine with other drugs that cause constipation, you might experience stomach problems. Tell your doctor if you have constipation, especially if you tend to get it.
  • If you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, you may be at a higher risk of becoming dependent on this medicine. Tell your doctor if you have ever had addiction issues.
  • Seizures have been reported during or soon after stopping this medicine. If you have seizures, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a severe medical condition, especially liver or kidney disease, as problems with brain function have been reported in some patients.
  • Breathing problems have been reported. If you have a nerve or breathing disorder, kidney problems, or are over 65, contact your doctor if you have difficulty breathing or shallow breathing.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
