How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, usually between 150 mg and 600 mg per day, adjusted for your condition.

Method

Take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you. Swallow the capsule whole with water. It is for oral use only.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 600 mg.

  • Vision changes, unusual eye movements, tunnel vision, light flashes, jerky movements, weakened reflexes, hyperactivity, dizziness when standing, sensitive skin, loss of taste, burning sensation, tremor with movement, decreased consciousness, loss of consciousness, fainting, increased sensitivity to noise, feeling unwell
  • Dry eyes, swollen eyes, eye pain, worse vision, watery eyes, eye irritation
  • Heart rhythm problems, fast heartbeat, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, changes in heartbeat, heart failure

  • Disinhibition, suicidal behavior, suicidal thoughts
  • Severe allergic reactions, including serious skin rashes, yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice), and symptoms like Parkinson's disease (shaking, slow movements, stiffness)
  • Liver failure
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Developing dependence on this medicine

Important Warnings

  • If you get swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread rash, contact a doctor right away.
  • If you get severe skin reactions, like red spots or blisters, stop taking the medicine and see a doctor immediately.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy and sleepy, which might make you fall, especially if you are older. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • If your vision becomes blurry or changes, tell your doctor right away.
  • If you have had heart disease, tell your doctor before starting this medicine, as it can cause heart failure.

  • If you notice you are urinating less, tell your doctor, as this medicine can cause kidney problems.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact a doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you tend to get constipated and take other medicines that can cause it, as together they might make it worse.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever misused alcohol, prescription medicines, or drugs, as you might have a higher risk of becoming dependent on this medicine.
  • If you have seizures while taking this medicine or soon after stopping it, contact a doctor immediately.
  • If you have severe liver or kidney disease, tell your doctor, as this medicine can affect brain function.
  • If you have trouble breathing or your breathing is shallow, contact a doctor.
  • Do not drive or use machines until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and trouble concentrating.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor tells you to. Use reliable birth control if you can become pregnant.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly. Always talk to your doctor before stopping, as it should be done gradually.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
