How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, usually between 150 and 600 mg per day.

Method

Take the capsules whole with water 2 or 3 times a day, usually morning and evening, or morning, afternoon, and evening.

Important

Do not take more than 600 mg per day.

  • Dry mouth, constipation, throwing up, gas, diarrhea, upset stomach, swollen stomach
  • Trouble getting an erection
  • Swelling in the body, including arms and legs
  • Feeling drunk, walking unusually
  • Weight gain
  • Muscle cramps, joint pain, back pain, pain in arms and legs
  • Sore throat
RARE
  • Less appetite, weight loss, low blood sugar, high blood sugar
  • Changes in how you see yourself, restlessness, sadness, strong worry, mood changes, trouble finding words, seeing things that are not there, strange dreams, panic attacks, not caring, anger, feeling very happy, mental problems, trouble thinking, more interest in sex, problems with sex like not being able to reach climax or delayed ejaculation
  • Vision changes like tunnel vision, flashes of light, jerky eye movements, less sharp reflexes, being very active, dizziness when standing up, sensitive skin, loss of taste, burning feeling, shaking when moving, less alert, losing consciousness, fainting, more sensitive to noise, feeling unwell
  • Dry eyes, swollen eyes, eye pain, tired eyes, watery eyes, irritated eyes
  • Irregular heartbeat, fast heartbeat, low or high blood pressure, changes in heart rhythm, heart failure
  • Flushing, hot flashes
  • Breathing problems, dry nose, stuffy nose
  • More saliva, heartburn, numbness around the mouth
  • Sweating, rash, chills, fever
  • Muscle twitching, swollen joints, stiff muscles, muscle pain, neck pain
  • Chest pain
  • Trouble urinating or painful urination, accidental urinating
  • Weakness, thirst, feeling tight in the chest
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., higher muscle enzyme, liver enzymes, creatinine; lower platelets, white blood cells, potassium)
  • Allergic reactions (face swelling, itching, hives, runny nose, nosebleeds, cough, snoring)
  • Painful periods
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Unusual sense of smell, seeing things shake, trouble seeing how far away things are, brighter vision, loss of sight
  • Wide pupils, crossed eyes
  • Cold sweats, tight feeling in throat, swollen tongue
  • Swollen pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Slow or less movement
  • Trouble writing
  • Fluid in the belly
  • Fluid in the lungs
  • Seizures
  • Changes in heart's electrical activity (ECG) linked to irregular heartbeats
  • Muscle damage
  • Nipple discharge, unusual breast growth, breast growth in men
  • Missed periods
  • Kidney failure, less urine, unable to urinate
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Acting without control, suicidal behavior, suicidal thoughts
  • Severe allergic skin reactions (red patches, blisters, peeling skin, ulcers in mouth/throat/nose/genitals/eyes) possibly with fever or flu-like symptoms (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Parkinson-like symptoms (tremor, slow movement, stiff muscles)
  • Liver failure
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Becoming dependent on the medicine

Important Warnings

  • If your face, lips, tongue, or throat swell, or you get a widespread rash, tell your doctor right away as these could be signs of an allergic reaction.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get severe skin reactions like red patches, blisters, or peeling skin, especially with fever or flu-like symptoms.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy and sleepy, which might increase your risk of falling, especially if you are elderly; be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any changes in your vision, such as blurred vision or loss of vision.
  • If you have diabetes and gain weight while taking this medicine, your diabetes medication might need to be adjusted.

  • If you have heart disease, tell your doctor before taking this medicine, as it can cause heart failure in some people, especially older patients with existing heart problems.
  • If you notice you are urinating less while taking this medicine, tell your doctor, as this could be a sign of kidney problems.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor right away.
  • If you experience constipation or other stomach problems, especially when taking other pain medicines, tell your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever abused alcohol, prescription medicines, or illegal drugs, as you might have a higher risk of becoming dependent on this medicine.
  • If you have seizures during or soon after stopping this medicine, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you have a serious medical condition affecting your liver or kidneys, tell your doctor, as this medicine has been linked to brain function problems in some patients.
  • If you have nervous system problems, breathing issues, kidney problems, or are over 65, your doctor might adjust your dose; contact your doctor if you have trouble breathing or shallow breaths.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
