How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, usually between 150 mg and 600 mg daily.

Method

Swallow capsules whole with water, either two or three times a day as prescribed by your doctor, at roughly the same times each day.

Important

Do not take more than 600 mg in one day, or more than your doctor has prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, headache
  • Increased appetite
  • Feeling happy (euphoria), confusion, disorientation
  • Decreased sex drive, irritability
  • Trouble focusing, clumsiness, memory problems, memory loss
  • Shaking, trouble speaking, tingling, numbness
  • Feeling calm, less aware, sleeplessness, tiredness, feeling unusual
  • Blurred vision, double vision, spinning sensation, balance problems, falls
  • Dry mouth, constipation, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, nausea, swollen stomach
  • Erection problems
  • Swelling, especially in arms and legs
  • Feeling drunk, unusual walking
  • Weight gain
  • Muscle cramps, joint pain, back pain, limb pain
  • Sore throat
RARE
  • Mood changes like depression, strong anxiety, panic attacks, or thoughts of harming yourself
  • Severe vision changes like vision loss, tunnel vision, flashing lights, or wide pupils
  • Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face or tongue, hives, or severe skin rashes with blisters or peeling skin
  • Heart problems such as an abnormal or fast heartbeat, or heart failure
  • Breathing difficulties or shallow breathing
  • Kidney problems, including less urine, inability to urinate, or kidney failure
  • Liver problems, like yellow skin or eyes, liver failure, or inflammation of the liver
  • Seizures
  • Muscle damage, very stiff muscles, or symptoms like Parkinson's disease (shaking, slow movement)
  • Fluid buildup in the belly or lungs, fluid from breasts, or unusual breast growth (also in men)
  • Pancreas inflammation or trouble swallowing
  • Becoming dependent on this medicine

Important Warnings

  • If you get an allergic reaction like swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread skin rash, contact your doctor right away.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get severe skin reactions like red patches with blisters or peeling skin.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and sleepiness, which might increase the risk of falls, especially for older people. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • This medicine might cause blurred vision, vision loss, or other vision changes, which are usually temporary. Tell your doctor right away if your eyesight changes.
  • If you have diabetes and gain weight while taking this medicine, your diabetes treatment might need to be adjusted.

  • If you have heart problems, tell your doctor before taking this medicine, as it can sometimes cause heart failure, especially in older patients with existing heart conditions.
  • If you notice less urine while taking this medicine, tell your doctor, as it has been reported to cause kidney problems in some patients.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately, as this medicine, like other epilepsy medications, has been linked to such thoughts.
  • If you take other medicines that cause constipation (like some pain medicines) along with this medicine, you might get stomach problems. Tell your doctor if you have constipation, especially if you often get it.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever misused alcohol, prescription medicines, or illegal drugs, or if you have been addicted to them. You might have a higher risk of becoming dependent on this medicine.
  • If you have seizures during or soon after taking this medicine, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a severe illness like liver or kidney disease, as some patients with other health problems have reported brain issues (encephalopathy) while taking this medicine.
  • If you have trouble breathing or shallow breathing, contact your doctor. Your doctor might adjust your dose if you have nervous system or breathing problems, kidney issues, or are over 65.
  • Some people may become dependent on this medicine. If you worry about this or notice signs like needing more than prescribed, using it for other reasons, or feeling unwell when you stop, talk to your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
