How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose for you, usually between 150 mg and 600 mg daily.

Do not take more than 600 mg in one day.

  • Severe allergic reactions including trouble breathing, eye inflammation, and severe skin rashes (red, target-shaped spots, blisters, peeling skin, sores in mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes). Fever and flu-like symptoms might occur before these rashes.

  • Parkinsonism (symptoms like shaking, slow movement, and stiff muscles)

  • Drug dependence (addiction to the medicine)

Important Warnings

  • If you get swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread skin rash, contact a doctor right away.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get severe skin rashes, like red patches with blisters or peeling skin, especially around the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes. You might also have a fever or flu-like symptoms.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy or sleepy, which may cause falls, especially in older people. Be careful until you know how it affects you.
  • Tell your doctor right away if your vision changes, becomes blurry, or you lose vision, as these effects are often temporary.
  • If you have heart disease, tell your doctor before taking this medicine, as some patients, especially older ones, have reported heart failure.

  • If you notice you are urinating less while taking this medicine, tell your doctor, as kidney problems have been reported.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you have constipation, especially if you tend to get it, as this medicine with some pain medicines can cause stomach problems like constipation.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever misused alcohol, prescription medicines, or illegal drugs, or if you have been dependent on them, as this medicine may carry a higher risk of dependence for you.
  • If you experience seizures during or soon after stopping this medicine, contact your doctor right away.
  • If you have breathing problems, shallow breathing, a nervous system disease, lung disease, or kidney problems, or if you are over 65, tell your doctor. They might change your dose or advise you to contact them if breathing difficulties occur.
  • This medicine should not be used by children or teenagers under 18 years old, as its safety and effectiveness have not been proven for this age group.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning a pregnancy, or might become pregnant, talk to your doctor. This medicine can cause birth defects if used during the first three months of pregnancy. Women who can become pregnant must use effective birth control.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy, sleepy, and affect your ability to focus. Do not drive, use complex machines, or do other risky activities until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
