How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose, usually 150–600 mg per day.

Method

Take the capsules by mouth with water, whole, either two times (morning and evening) or three times daily (morning, afternoon, and evening) as directed by your doctor.

Important

Do not exceed 600 mg per day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, headache.
  • Increased appetite.
  • Elevated mood, confusion, disorientation, decreased sex drive, irritability.
  • Trouble concentrating, clumsiness, memory problems, tremors, speech difficulties, tingling or numbness, sleeplessness, fatigue, unusual feeling.
  • Blurred vision, double vision.
  • Vertigo, balance problems, falls.
  • Dry mouth, constipation, vomiting, flatulence, diarrhea, nausea, bloated stomach.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Swelling, including in arms and legs.
  • Feeling drunk, abnormal walking style.
  • Weight gain.
  • Muscle cramps, joint pain, back pain, limb pain.
  • Sore throat.
RARE
  • Loss of appetite, weight loss, low or high blood sugar.
  • Changes in self-perception, restlessness, depression, anxiety, mood swings, difficulty finding words, hallucinations, unusual dreams, panic attacks, aggression, trouble thinking, increased sex drive, problems with sexual function (e.g., difficulty reaching orgasm).
  • Vision changes (like tunnel vision, flashes of light, vision loss), abnormal eye movements, jerky movements, weakened reflexes, dizziness when standing, sensitive skin, loss of taste, burning sensation, tremor when moving, reduced awareness, fainting, increased sensitivity to noise, feeling unwell.
  • Dry eyes, swollen eyes, eye pain, tired eyes, watery eyes, eye irritation.
  • Heart rhythm disorders, fast heart rate, low or high blood pressure, heart failure.
  • Flushing/redness, hot flashes.
  • Breathing difficulties, dry nose, stuffy nose.
  • Increased salivation, heartburn, numbness around the mouth.
  • Sweating, rash, chills, fever.
  • Muscle twitching, joint swelling, muscle stiffness, muscle pain, neck pain.
  • Chest pain.
  • Difficulty or pain when urinating, urinary incontinence.
  • Weakness, thirst, tight feeling in the chest.
  • Changes in blood and liver test results.
  • Allergic reactions, facial swelling, itching, hives, runny nose, nosebleeds, cough, snoring.
  • Painful menstruation.
  • Cold hands and feet.
  • Changes in sense of smell, shaky vision, changes in depth perception, bright vision, vision loss.
  • Dilated pupils, squint.
  • Cold sweat, tight feeling in the throat, swollen tongue.
  • Pancreatitis.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Slowed or reduced movements.
  • Difficulty writing.
  • Fluid accumulation in the abdomen.
  • Fluid in the lungs.
  • Seizures.
  • Heart rhythm disorders (seen on ECG).
  • Muscle damage.
  • Fluid discharge from the breast, abnormal breast growth, breast growth in men.
  • Missed periods.
  • Kidney damage, decreased urine output, urinary retention.
  • Decreased white blood cell count.
  • Disinhibition, self-harming behavior, suicidal thoughts.
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as breathing difficulties, eye inflammation, or severe rash with blisters and peeling skin.
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Parkinson's-like symptoms, such as tremor, slow movement, and stiffness.
  • Liver failure, hepatitis (liver inflammation).
  • Developing dependence on the medicine.

Important Warnings

  • If you experience a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, or a widespread rash, contact a doctor immediately.
  • Serious skin reactions, such as blistering or peeling skin, have been reported. Stop taking the medicine and seek medical help immediately.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness, which may increase the risk of falls. Be careful until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if your vision changes, such as becoming blurry or losing vision. These effects are usually temporary.
  • If you have diabetes and gain weight, your diabetes medication may need to be adjusted.

  • If you are taking other medications, especially those that cause drowsiness, this medicine may worsen those symptoms. Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking.
  • If you have heart disease, tell your doctor, as this medicine can sometimes cause heart failure.
  • If you have kidney problems or notice decreased urination, tell your doctor.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicidal thoughts, seek medical help immediately.
  • If you take other medicines that cause constipation, this medicine may worsen it. Tell your doctor if you experience constipation.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol, prescription drug, or illicit drug abuse, as you may be more likely to become dependent on this medicine.
  • If you experience seizures while taking this medicine or soon after stopping it, contact a doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, as this medicine can sometimes cause brain function to worsen.
  • If you have nervous system or respiratory disorders, kidney problems, or are over 65 years old, you are more prone to breathing difficulties. Contact your doctor if you experience breathing difficulties or shallow breathing.
