How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the dose, and you should follow it; treatment usually starts with a higher dose that is then lowered.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth, usually once a day in the morning between 7 and 9 AM.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, and you should not take more than prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Decrease in white blood cells, increased risk of infections, hidden or worsened infections, lung abscesses (in lung cancer patients), fungal infections on mucous membranes and skin.
  • Increase in white blood cells and platelets, hormone imbalances (Cushing's syndrome), high cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood fats, worsening heart failure, high blood pressure, oral yeast infections, worsening symptoms of ulcerative colitis, inflammation of the small intestine (ileitis) or colon pockets (diverticulitis), acne, thinning skin, slow wound healing, skin inflammation, bruising, facial redness, sweating, bone loss (osteoporosis), muscle weakness (myopathy), reduced fluid and salt excretion, low potassium levels, needing to urinate at night.
RARE
  • Psychiatric disorders, increased eye pressure (glaucoma), cataracts (clouding of the eye lens), increased formation of urinary stones, muscle disease affecting breathing muscles.
  • Blood clot, thyroid gland dysfunction, corneal damage (with hidden herpes infection), high brain pressure, prolonged coma related to cerebral malaria, dementia, bone death.
  • Increased production of parathyroid hormone, porphyria attacks, hyperosmolar coma, severe skin reactions (epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome), ketoacidosis, bulging eyes.
  • Blurred vision, heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy), increased risk of heart rhythm disorders, heart attack, slow heart rate, indigestion, stomach ulcer (with NSAID drugs), gastrointestinal bleeding, pancreatitis, scleroderma renal crisis (especially in patients with prior scleroderma diagnosis taking over 15 mg daily).
  • Swelling (edema), high blood sugar and sugar in urine (may normalize after stopping treatment), onset or worsening of diabetes, allergic reactions (e.g., skin rash).

Important Warnings

  • Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before taking this medicine.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly; reduce the dose gradually as your doctor advises.
  • If you have a fever or stress during treatment, contact your doctor, as your dose might need to be adjusted.
  • If you have diabetes, you must carefully monitor your insulin dose while taking Prednisolon.
  • Avoid live vaccines if you are taking high doses of Prednisolon (over 15 mg per day).

  • If you have scleroderma (a skin hardening disease) and take at least 15 mg of Prednisolon daily, tell your doctor, as it might increase the risk of a severe kidney crisis.
  • Prednisolon can cause mood changes, depression, or psychosis; if you suspect depression or suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience blurred vision or other vision problems.
  • Prednisolon 5 mg tablets contain hydrogenated castor oil, which may cause stomach upset and diarrhea.
