How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for Pomalidomide Olpha is 4 mg daily.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole, preferably with water. Do not break, open, or chew them. You can take them with or without food, around the same time each day.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose; it is often 4 mg daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lung infections (pneumonia and bronchitis)
  • Bacterial or viral infections of the nose, sinuses, and throat
  • Flu-like symptoms (influenza)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia), causing tiredness and weakness
  • Low potassium levels, causing tiredness, muscle cramps, muscle pain, heart palpitations, tingling, numbness, shortness of breath, and mood changes
  • High blood sugar
  • Fast and irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation, diarrhea, or nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Lack of energy
  • Difficulty falling asleep or waking up
  • Dizziness, tremor
  • Muscle cramps, muscle weakness
  • Bone pain, back pain
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensation in the skin, pain in hands or feet (peripheral sensory neuropathy)
  • Body swelling, including arms and legs
  • Rashes
  • Urinary tract infection, which may cause burning when urinating or frequent urination
RARE
  • Falls
  • Bleeding in the head
  • Reduced movement or sensation in hands, arms, feet, and legs due to nerve damage
  • Numbness, itching, and prickling sensation in the skin (paresthesia)
  • Spinning sensation in the head that makes it difficult to stand or move normally
  • Swelling caused by fluid
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Skin itching
  • Shingles
  • Heart attack (chest pain spreading to arms, neck or jaw, feeling sweaty and short of breath, nausea or vomiting)
  • Chest pain, lung or bronchial infection
  • High blood pressure
  • Decrease in red and white blood cells and platelets (pancytopenia), which increases risk of bleeding, bruising, tiredness, weakness, shortness of breath, and infections
  • Decrease in lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell), often due to infection (lymphopenia)
  • Low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), causing tiredness, general weakness, muscle cramps, irritability, and potentially low calcium levels, leading to numbness/tingling in hands, feet or lips, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, dizziness or weakness, and confusion
  • Low phosphate levels (hypophosphatemia), causing muscle weakness, irritability, or confusion
  • High calcium levels (hypercalcemia), which can slow reflexes and cause skeletal muscle weakness
  • High potassium levels, which may cause abnormal heart rhythm
  • Low sodium levels, which may cause tiredness, confusion, muscle twitching, seizures, or coma
  • High uric acid levels, which may cause gout (a type of arthritis)
  • Low blood pressure, which may cause dizziness or fainting
  • Sore or dry mouth
  • Changes in taste
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Loss of consciousness, fainting
  • Blurred vision (cataract)
  • Kidney damage
  • Inability to urinate
  • Abnormal liver test results
  • Pelvic pain
  • Weight loss
  • Stroke
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) causing itchy skin, yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice), pale stools, dark urine, and abdominal pain
  • Breakdown of cancer cells releasing toxic substances into the blood (tumor lysis syndrome), which can lead to kidney problems
  • Underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), which can cause tiredness, sluggishness, muscle weakness, slow heart rate, and weight gain

Important Warnings

  • Pomalidomide Olpha can cause severe birth defects and possibly death of an unborn baby. Do not take if you are pregnant or might become pregnant. Follow pregnancy prevention guidelines.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to pomalidomide or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had blood clots before, as this medicine increases the risk.
  • Inform your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or smoke.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a lot of cancer cells in your body, as this can lead to serious kidney and heart problems (tumor lysis syndrome).

  • Tell your doctor if you have nerve damage (neuropathy) causing tingling or pain in your hands or feet.
  • Inform your doctor if you have or have had hepatitis B, as this medicine can reactivate the virus.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop a severe skin reaction, such as a widespread rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, or flu-like symptoms.
  • This medicine may increase the risk of other types of cancer. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you experience vision changes, trouble speaking, weakness in arms or legs, balance problems, numbness, memory loss, or confusion, as these could be signs of a serious brain condition (PML).
