How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 4 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water. You can take them with or without food, around the same time each day. Do not break, open, or chew the capsules.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose, typically starting at 4 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lung infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
  • Bacterial or viral infections of the nose, sinuses, and throat
  • Flu-like symptoms (influenza)
  • Low red blood cell count, leading to tiredness and weakness (anemia)
  • Low potassium levels in blood, causing tiredness, muscle cramps, muscle pain, heart palpitations, tingling or numbness, shortness of breath, and mood changes
  • High blood sugar
  • Fast and irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation, diarrhea, or nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Lack of energy
  • Difficulty falling asleep or waking up
  • Dizziness, tremor
  • Muscle cramps, muscle weakness
  • Bone pain, back pain
  • Numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the skin, pain in hands or feet (peripheral sensory neuropathy)
  • Swelling in the body, including arms and legs
  • Rashes
  • Urinary tract infection, which may cause burning when urinating or frequent urination
  • Falls
  • Bleeding in the head
  • Weakness or loss of sensation in hands, arms, feet, and legs due to nerve damage (peripheral sensorimotor neuropathy)
  • Numbness, itching, and tingling on the skin (paresthesia)
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), which can make it hard to stand or move normally
  • Fluid retention swelling
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Itchy skin
  • Shingles
  • Heart attack (chest pain spreading to arms, neck, or jaw, sweating, shortness of breath, nausea, or vomiting)
  • Chest pain, lung or bronchial infection
  • High blood pressure
  • Decrease in red, white blood cells, and platelets at the same time (pancytopenia), leading to more bleeding, bruising, tiredness, weakness, shortness of breath, and higher risk of infections
  • Decrease in lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell), often due to infection (lymphopenia)
  • Low magnesium levels in blood, causing tiredness, weakness, muscle cramps, irritability, and may lead to low calcium levels, causing numbness/tingling in hands/feet/lips, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, dizziness, weakness, and confusion
  • Low phosphate levels in blood, which can cause muscle weakness and irritability or confusion
  • High calcium levels in blood, which can cause slow reflexes and weak skeletal muscles
  • High potassium levels in blood, which can cause abnormal heart rhythm
  • Low sodium levels in blood, which can cause tiredness and confusion, muscle twitching, seizures (epileptic fits), or coma
  • High uric acid levels in blood, which can cause a type of arthritis called gout
  • Low blood pressure, which can cause dizziness or fainting
  • Mouth pain or dry mouth
  • Changes in taste
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Loss of consciousness, fainting
  • Blurred vision (cataract)
  • Kidney damage
  • Inability to urinate
  • Abnormal liver test results
  • Pelvic pain
  • Weight loss
RARE
  • Stroke
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis), which can cause itchy skin, yellowing of skin and whites of eyes, pale stool, dark urine, and abdominal pain
  • Cancer cell breakdown, releasing toxic compounds into the bloodstream (tumor lysis syndrome), which can cause kidney problems
  • Underactive thyroid gland, which may cause symptoms like tiredness, drowsiness (lethargy), muscle weakness, slow heart rate, and weight gain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, might become pregnant, or are allergic to any of its ingredients. Follow all birth control instructions carefully during and after treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of blood clots, allergic reactions to similar medicines like thalidomide or lenalidomide, or if you have had a heart attack, heart failure, or breathing problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had nerve damage (neuropathy) or Hepatitis B infection, as this medicine can worsen these conditions.
  • If you notice any new skin changes or growths during treatment, tell your doctor right away.
  • Return any unused capsules to the pharmacy after your treatment ends.
