This medicine is usually given through a plastic tube with a needle into a vein. Your doctor might choose another way to give it.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fever
  • Pain, redness, swelling, or infection at the injection site
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting)
  • Headache
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • High blood sugar
  • Swelling in your arms or legs (fluid overload)
  • Fast heartbeat or palpitations
  • Low blood pressure
  • Skin rash, redness, or hives
  • Muscle twitching or stiffness
  • Thirst
  • Drowsiness
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Chills or cold sweat
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction, including swelling of the face, lips, or throat, and severe breathing problems or dizziness
  • Seizures
  • Confusion or coma (unconsciousness)
  • Very slow heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, or heart stops (cardiac arrest)
  • Paralysis (inability to move)
  • Brain swelling that can cause brain damage
  • Blood clot forming at the injection site
  • Blood becoming too acidic (acidosis) or too alkaline (alkalosis)
  • Very low or very high potassium or sodium levels in the blood
  • Fluid leaking outside the vein into surrounding tissues, which can cause damage and scarring

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you have too much chloride, sodium, or potassium in your blood.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney problems or a very slow heartbeat.
  • Do not use if your blood is too alkaline or has too little calcium or stomach acid.
  • Do not use if you take certain 'water pills' (diuretics) that make your body hold onto potassium, such as amiloride or spironolactone.
  • Do not use if your diabetes is not controlled, if you have very high blood sugar, or if your body has trouble processing sugar (glucose intolerance).

  • Do not use if you are allergic to glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium acetate, sodium gluconate, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if the solution looks cloudy, has particles, or if the package is damaged.
  • Do not use a bag that has already been partially used.
  • Do not give through the same needle used for a blood transfusion, as it can harm red blood cells.
