Pirfenidone Stada contains pirfenidone and is used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in adults, helping to reduce scarring and swelling in the lungs.

How to Use

Dosage

Take one 801 mg dose (three yellow tablets or one brown tablet) three times a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, with or after food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2403 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Respiratory infections, like colds or sinus infections.
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, stomach pain, bloating, or general discomfort in the stomach.
  • Decreased appetite or weight loss.
  • Tiredness, dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, or drowsiness.
  • Skin reactions to sunlight, rash, itching, redness, dry skin, or sunburn.
  • Joint or muscle pain.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Changes in taste.
  • Hot flashes.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood tests.
  • Chest pain.
  • Shortness of breath or cough.
  • Feeling weak or having low energy.
RARE
  • Swelling of the face, lips, and/or tongue, itching, hives, difficulty breathing, or feeling faint (a severe allergic reaction, angioedema, or anaphylaxis). Seek immediate medical help.
  • Yellowing of eyes or skin, dark urine, itching, pain in the upper right abdomen, loss of appetite, bleeding or easy bruising, tiredness (signs of serious liver problems). Seek immediate medical help.
  • Red, blistering spots on the skin, peeling skin, or sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes, sometimes with fever or flu-like symptoms (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis). Seek immediate medical help.
  • Widespread rash, high fever, and swollen lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome). Seek immediate medical help.
  • Low sodium levels in the blood, which can cause headache, dizziness, confusion, weakness, muscle cramps, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Decreased white blood cells in blood tests.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to pirfenidone or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have previously experienced swelling of the face, lips, and/or tongue (angioedema) while taking pirfenidone.
  • Do not use if you are taking a medicine called fluvoxamine (used for depression or OCD).
  • Do not use if you have severe or advanced liver disease.
  • Do not use if you have severe or advanced kidney disease requiring dialysis.

  • Avoid sun exposure (including sunlamps) and use sunscreen daily, as your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking certain antibiotics (like doxycycline) that can increase sun sensitivity.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver problems.
  • Stop smoking before and during treatment, as smoking can reduce the medicine's effect.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and tiredness. Be careful if you need to be alert or operate machinery.
  • This medicine may cause weight loss. Your doctor will monitor your weight.
  • Do not drink grapefruit juice during treatment, as it can stop the medicine from working properly.
  • Avoid use during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
  • Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years.
