How to Use

Dosage

The dose is gradually increased. The maintenance dose is 801 mg (3 yellow tablets or 1 purple tablet) three times a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, during or after a meal, to reduce side effects like nausea and dizziness.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2403 mg.

COMMON
  • Throat or respiratory tract infections that may spread to the lungs and/or sinusitis
  • Nausea
  • Stomach problems like acid reflux, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, bloating, stomach pain, heartburn, and gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Fatigue or feeling tired
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Joint pain
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Sleepiness
  • Taste changes
  • Hot flashes
  • Skin reactions to sunlight or sunlamps, sunburn

  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood tests
RARE
  • Low sodium levels in the blood, which can cause headache, dizziness, confusion, weakness, muscle cramps, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Blood tests may show a decreased number of white blood cells.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to pirfenidone or if you have had swelling of the face, lips, or tongue with breathing difficulties when using pirfenidone previously.
  • Do not use if you are taking fluvoxamine (used for depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder).
  • Do not use if you have severe or advanced liver disease or kidney disease requiring dialysis.
  • Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen and protective clothing during treatment, as this medicine can make you more sensitive to sunlight.
  • Stop smoking before and during treatment, as smoking can reduce the medicine's effectiveness.

  • This medicine may cause dizziness and fatigue. Be careful when driving or operating machinery.
  • This medicine can cause serious liver problems. You will have regular blood tests to monitor your liver function.
  • If you notice severe skin reactions, such as widespread blistering or peeling skin, stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical attention.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before use. Use during pregnancy should be avoided.
