How to Use

Dosage

The recommended dose for adults and adolescents (12 years and older) is 4 g/0.5 g of piperacillin/tazobactam, given into a vein every 6-8 hours.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a slow drip (infusion) into a vein over 30 minutes.

Important

For adults and adolescents, the maximum daily dose is usually 16 g/2 g (given as 4 g/0.5 g up to four times a day). For children, your doctor will calculate the dose based on their weight, and a single dose should not be more than 4 g/0.5 g.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Fungal infection
  • Changes in blood cell counts or proteins, affecting clotting
  • Headache, sleeplessness
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, upset stomach
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Rash, itching
  • Abnormal kidney blood test results
  • Fever, reaction at the injection site
RARE
  • Decreased white blood cells, prolonged blood clotting time
  • Low blood potassium or blood sugar
  • Seizures
  • Low blood pressure, inflamed veins (tenderness or redness in the affected area), skin redness
  • Increased bilirubin in blood
  • Other skin reactions, such as skin changes or hives
  • Joint and muscle pain, chills
  • Severe lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis), nosebleeds, severe colon inflammation, mouth sores, skin peeling all over the body
  • Severe skin rashes, such as blisters, peeling skin, or red, target-like spots (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Severe allergic reaction that can affect the skin and internal organs, like kidneys and liver (DRESS syndrome)
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes
  • Damage to blood cells, which may include shortness of breath, bleeding, or bruising
  • Severe or persistent diarrhea with fever and weakness
  • Sudden confusion or disorientation

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, other penicillins, cephalosporins, or similar antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have diarrhea before, during, or after treatment. Do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without talking to your doctor first.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, are on dialysis, or have low potassium levels in your blood. Your doctor may need to check your blood values.
  • The risk of kidney problems may increase if you take this medicine at the same time as another antibiotic called vancomycin.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners or if you experience any unexpected bleeding during treatment.

  • Tell your doctor if you have seizures during treatment or if you think your infection is getting worse or you have a new infection.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you have several symptoms like fever, swollen glands, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or rash, as these could be signs of a severe immune condition (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis).
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years old.
