How to Use

Dosage

Adults and teenagers over 12 years old usually receive 4 grams of piperacillin and 0.5 grams of tazobactam into a vein every 6–8 hours.

Method

The medicine is given directly into a vein as a drip (infusion), which takes about 30 minutes.

Important

Your doctor will decide your exact maximum dose. Generally, up to 16 grams of piperacillin and 2 grams of tazobactam can be given per day.

  • Severe skin reactions, including blisters or widespread skin peeling.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, other penicillins, or similar antibiotics.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe rashes (like blisters, skin peeling), swelling of your face, lips, or tongue, shortness of breath, yellowing of your skin or eyes, or other severe allergic reactions.
  • Report immediately to your doctor if you experience severe or persistent diarrhea with fever or weakness.
  • Tell your doctor if you have unexpected shortness of breath, blood in your urine, nosebleeds, or bruising, or if you are diagnosed with an immune system problem like hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) with symptoms like fever, swollen glands, weakness, dizziness, and rash.
  • If your blood potassium level is low.

  • If you are also taking another antibiotic called vancomycin.
  • If you are taking blood-thinning medicines.
  • If you experience seizures during treatment.
  • If your infection gets worse or you get a new infection.
