How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents over 12, the usual dose is 4 g/0.5 g given every 6 to 8 hours.

Method

This medicine is given as a 30-minute drip (infusion) into a vein by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 16 g/2 g; a single dose should not exceed 4 g/0.5 g.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Yeast infection
  • Changes in blood tests like low platelet count, low red blood cells or hemoglobin, and prolonged blood clotting time.
  • Low blood protein levels.
  • Headache, difficulty sleeping.
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, upset stomach.
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood.
  • Rash, itching.
  • Abnormal kidney function tests.
  • Fever, reactions at the injection site.
RARE
  • Low white blood cell count, prolonged blood clotting, low blood potassium, low blood sugar.
  • Seizures (especially with high doses or kidney problems).
  • Low blood pressure, vein inflammation (pain or redness where the medicine is injected).
  • Skin redness, skin lesions, hives.
  • Increased bilirubin (a substance from red blood cell breakdown).
  • Muscle and joint pain, chills.
  • Severe drop in white blood cells (agranulocytosis), nosebleeds.
  • Severe colon infection, mouth inflammation.
  • Widespread skin peeling (like toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Severe decrease in all blood cells (pancytopenia, neutropenia), premature breakdown of red blood cells (hemolytic anemia), small purple spots on skin (purpura), prolonged bleeding, increased platelets or eosinophils.
  • Allergic reactions, including severe whole-body allergic reactions affecting skin, mucous membranes and organs (e.g., kidneys, liver), or severe skin reactions with fever, swelling, and small fluid-filled blisters (AGEP).
  • Liver inflammation, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Kidney failure or problems, lung disease with increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell).
  • Acute confusion, disorientation, and delirium.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, any other ingredients, or other antibiotics like penicillins or cephalosporins.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have diarrhea before, during, or after treatment. Do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without talking to your doctor first.
  • Your doctor may check your kidney function and blood potassium levels if they are low.
  • If you have kidney or liver problems or are on dialysis, your doctor might adjust your dose and do regular blood tests.
  • Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners or if you experience unexpected bleeding.

  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have seizures during treatment.
  • If you suspect your infection is getting worse or you have a new infection, tell your doctor.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin rashes, blisters, or peeling skin (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis), or a widespread rash with fever, swollen glands, and organ problems (DRESS syndrome).
  • Get urgent medical attention if you have swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or other body parts.
  • Get urgent medical attention if you have shortness of breath or wheezing.
