How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose for adults and children over 12 is 4 g/0.5 g every 6-8 hours. For children aged 2-12, the dose is based on their weight and given every 6 or 8 hours.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as a drip into a vein (infusion) over 30 minutes.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and children is generally 16 g of piperacillin and 2 g of tazobactam.

  • Diarrhea

RARE
  • Low potassium or blood sugar
  • Seizures
  • Low blood pressure, vein inflammation
  • Reddening of skin, skin sores, hives
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Chills
  • Severe changes in blood cell counts, bruising, nosebleeds
  • Severe colon infection, mouth sores
  • Severe allergic skin reactions (e.g., blistering, skin peeling)
  • Liver problems, yellow skin or eyes
  • Kidney failure or problems
  • Confusion

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to piperacillin, tazobactam, penicillin, or similar antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get severe or lasting diarrhea during or after treatment.
  • If you have kidney or liver problems, or low potassium in your blood, your doctor will need to check your dose and condition closely.
  • Tell your doctor if you have seizures while taking this medicine.
  • Get urgent medical help if you have a fever, swollen glands, feel weak, dizzy, short of breath, bruise easily, or have a rash, as these could be signs of a very serious immune reaction (HLH).
